Testing Strategies for Ensuring the Success of Mobile Applications

Daniel Hartveld, Red Ant; Amichai Lesser, Shunra; Toby Marsden, Hewlett Packard
The use of mobile applications to conduct day to day business is set to increase exponentially over the next few years. Jupiter Research estimates that 1 in 8 will use mobile ticketing in 2015 and up to 1 billion will access financial services. Yet many companies have yet to develop a robust testing strategy for mobile applications

Testing mobile applications is complex. Not only do test teams have to validate the functionality of the mobile application, they also have to consider their performance under load as well as across multiple devices, carriers, operating systems and geographies. This requires test teams to adapt existing test methodologies and processes to ensure consistent behaviour across many environments

Challenges include:
-Evaluating the need for emulator-based or real device testing solutions
-Coping with varying bandwidth and user loads
-Identifying optimization opportunities for mobile application clients and infrastructure to ensure that applications remain responsive under challenging mobile network conditions and increasing load
-Post-release monitoring

Join HP, Shunra and Red Ant for a lively and interactive panel debate where we will be discussing the business impact of mobile functionality and performance across various sectors including finance, automotive, retail and consumer goods. In addition the experts panel will discuss best practices in implementing a mobile performance engineering framework to ensure companies are successful with their mobility projects.

  • The Key to Delivering Top Quality Mobile Applications to Your Customers Recorded: Nov 15 2012 59 mins
Millions of people are already using mobile applications to pay their bills, book travel, and connect with the people and companies they rate. Yet mobile technology is only just being adopted by many companies and according to a study by Localytics 26% of applications downloaded are used just once before being discarded. Hardly surprising when 65% of organisation’s lack the right tools to test mobile applications and a third lack the testing methodologies, processes and specialist expertise necessary to effectively certify mobile applications.

  • Manual software testing doesn't have to be tedious or time consuming! Recorded: Oct 17 2012 52 mins
The first and still the most popular method for doing testing is manually. Over the past decade we have seen the increased adoption of automated testing methods to accelerate those repeatable test cases; however, we still see the vast majority of testing being done manually. Many believe, especially with the advent of development methodologies such as Agile, that full automation of tests is unlikely to be achieved as the very nature of Agile development demands a more exploratory, spontaneous testing regime.

Manual testing is often error prone, test steps are easily missed, test data is often incorrectly entered, and defects are often incorrectly captured --decreasing the overall quality of the application and increasing costs due to the associated work replication.

With HP Sprinter, manual software testing no longer needs to be tedious, error prone, or time consuming.

In this webinar SQS will outline methods of assessing if your organisation is utilizing its testing resources most effectively and HP will show how HP Sprinter software, an easy to use and low cost solution, can deliver accurate and efficient manual software testing, dramatically reducing the time needed to perform manual software tests and increases their accuracy and effectiveness.

  • How Performant and Secure is your website Application? Recorded: Oct 11 2012 61 mins
Enterprise applications are becoming increasingly complex. With modern applications such as mobile apps and apps leveraging Web 2.0 technologies, there are many moving parts, which can easily become points of failure if not tested prior to deployment.

Coupled with the additional issue of just how secure is the application when it is known that 75% of all data breaches from cyber attacks are at the application layer, it means that Quality Assurance teams need to quickly respond with proven solutions to these challenges but ensuring that customer satisfaction and confidence isn’t impacted.

This Webinar will look at the Strategies that clients can pursue to ensure their client facing applications are Performant and Secure and will show how they can assess these attributes through the use of the complete HP Toolset for Performance and Security being made available through the HP SaaS Model.

Register for this webinar to hear:

  • Make it easier for your quality assurance teams to test mobile applications Recorded: Oct 9 2012 62 mins
More and more applications being developed today are designed for use on mobile devices. Businesses recognize that these applications create new growth channels to market and sell to a next-generation, real-time audience.

As with enterprise software applications, mobile applications are a foundation for good customer experiences, so they must adhere to the same rigid quality standards.

Mobile applications under test use entirely different methods, objects, and controls than contemporary enterprise software applications. So, in order to test mobile applications, QA teams have to test them individually for each operating system (OS) on each mobile device. Not only is this process not ergonomically friendly, but high levels of automated testing has been difficult to achieve because of the sheer volume of combinations to test.

This Webinar will look at how you can more effectively test you increasingly complex applications, which are demanding faster time to market, through automated functional and performance testing tools which have been recently enhanced for mobile testing through solutions from Perfecto.

Register for this 45 minute webinar to hear:

    - How to take the guesswork out of Mobile Testing, incl. Performance & Automated regression Testing
    - Client Case study
    - Demo of Mobile Test tools
