Peter is Director of Research at Coin Center, the leading non-profit research and advocacy group focused on the public policy issues facing cryptocurrency technologies such as Bitcoin. He is a graduate of NYU Law, as well as a self-taught web developer.
He drafts the Center’s public regulatory comments, and helps shape its research agenda. He has testified before Congress, briefed staff and members of the EU parliament, and educated policymakers and regulatory staff around the world on the subject of cryptocurrency regulation and decentralized computing systems. Previously, he was a Google Policy Fellow and collaborated with various digital rights organizations on projects related to privacy, surveillance, and digital copyright law.

Lorien was born in Malaysia where his dad was curing tropical diseases with the Peace Corps. He spent the next years of his life in Hawaii, San Diego and India before settling in the much more exciting, colorful and exceedingly polite land of Canada.
At the age of 24, Lorien moved his brother Matt's burgeoning internet company from their parent’s basement and over the next four years managed the growth of Interlog, one of Canada’s first commercial ISP’s.
Lorien and Matt teamed up again and co-founded Bird on a Wire Networks, a managed web hosting and data-center provider, which was one of the first of its kind in Canada. Within two years, the company was acquired by AT&T Canada. Their third start-up, Pingg.com, based in New York City, was acquired by 1800-Flowers.
Lorien has also been known to run divisions of Fortune 500 companies, spearhead the exponential US growth of a UK based tech company as Global VP Business Development and serve on the advisory board of a number of start-ups.

Her latest work focuses on cybersecurity, the rise of decentralized systems and cryptoassets, and dual-use technology. Claudia was a visiting fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington, DC in 2018-2019, and a seconded national expert at the European Central Bank in 2009-2010. She is currently taking a year of personal leave and will get back to the office in the Fall of 2023.
