Getting Closer to the Data Center: Colacem Case Study
Just after the conclusion of Colacem 2007 Project about WAN accelerator and caching systems, where the company had to dismiss 30+ peripheral servers consolidating all the functionality inside the central data center. Colacem completed the activity passing through domain consolidation and server virtualization. With the last PING project (Preparing Infrastructure to Next Generation), rolled out at the beginning of the current year, Colacem redesigned all data center network architecture and also implemented Unified Communication and Collaboration system, integrating all the functionalities with its new corporate portal. Colacem solution has become interesting because the company is maintaining a low international telecommunication cost profile, avoiding usage of expensive MPLS international links, preferring a smart utilization of Internet VPN connection to transport data, voice and video while maintaining enterprise class quality. Renzo Rossi is the ICT Infrastructure Manager (Chief Technology Officer) at the Information and Communication Technology Department of Colacem S.p.A., third largest Italian producer of cement. Renzo's responsibility covers all ICT infrastructure topics of the whole group, regarding core business activities with worldwide presence, and other non-core activities (media, sport, tourism). Significant experiences as Project Manager in innovating projects related to ICT infrastructure with Cisco, Microsoft, VMWare and IBM technology.
