Inferring the number of contributors to mixed DNA samples

Evidence samples containing DNA from two or more people can be difficult to interpret. Even ascertaining the number of contributors can be challenging. Underestimating the number of contributors can have important bearing on forensic casework and is surprisingly common -- especially if analysts are allowed to disregard seemingly inconsistent data from some loci.
