5 Steps to Green Desktop Computing

A desktop computer and monitor consumes about 920 kWh of electricity if on all year, but only 198 kWh if powered down overnight, weekends and holidays. This equates to an annual saving of £86 and 387 kg CO2eq. per computer. We estimate at least 8000 computers across the collegiate University are left on unnecessarily. With a robust approach to power management there is a potential annual saving of £690,000 and 3,100,000 kg CO2eq. At the University of Oxford we have developed power management monitoring (PMM) and wake on LAN (WOL) facilities to help departments and colleges implement green desktop computing initiatives. To encourage a robust approach we are promoting ‘5 steps to green desktop computing.’ Howard has been working in green computing since 2006. He initiated the low-carbon ICT project to deliver tools, advice and techniques to help IT staff improve power management. He is also working on the modelling4all.org project developing the Behaviour Composer, a web-based tool designed to support teachers, learners and researchers, including those with little/no programming experience, to build, share, and discuss computer models. Previously, Howard worked for the Royal Holloway University, a CRM consultancy and IBM Global Services.
