  • Using Universally Faceted Nano Content to Improve Findability
Using Universally Faceted Nano Content to Improve Findability
    John O'Gorman Live 60 mins
Technical communications has progressed from monolithic paper and digital manuals, to structured, topic-based authoring, and more recently down to 'microcontent' to improve quality, ease of access and consistency of message. 'Nano-content' is the next logical step in that progression and lives at the 'coalface' between content and data. It is the bridge between structured data and structured topics which, when properly managed, can add several new dimensions to technical publications work.

Universally faceted nano-content is a technique that takes a page from GPS applications that use triangulation (latitude, longitude, and elevation) to locate things in geographic space. Locating things in digital space should be just as intuitive and precise.

Join Scott Abel, The Content Wrangler, for this webinar with his special guest, John O’Gorman, Principal and Chief Disambiguation Officer at Quantum Semantics. John will walk through the process of identifying, classifying and using terminology to connect the language of a business or application to the content that supports its use. He will demonstrate how the same process can be extended to the content itself and how, in combination, faceted terminology takes findability to a whole new level.

    ABOUT JOHN O'GORMAN

John O'Gorman is a 30-year veteran of the information management trenches. He is the inventor of a universal classification protocol called Q6, and co-founder of Q6FSA, an enterprise information management collaboration with Robert Vane in the UK. His experiences run the gamut from terminology stores and data catalogs, to executive information reporting, data warehousing, activity-based costing and technical communications, localization and internationalization. His big 'aha' moment came when he realized that all of them are made of the same stuff and follow the same rules.

  • Perception vs. Reality: How does the current state of Healthcare Cyber Preparedn
Perception vs. Reality: How does the current state of Healthcare Cyber Preparedn
Mark Sangster, Chief Security Strategist eSentire Recorded: Dec 12 2018 61 mins
Like recent Cyber targets, Marriott and Quora, Healthcare providers, insurers and med-tech firms present a rich target for cyber criminals, offering lucrative gains. eSentire conducted independent research, interviewing 1,250 senior executives, leaders and security practitioners to understand the risks that face their organizations, and the strategies and investments they are making to protect their businesses. What emerges is a paradox of perceived readiness when it comes to responding to cyberattacks, which is not supported by the underlying data when it comes to spend, security programs, reporting, and attack data from eSentire’s security operations centers.
Recent cyber-attacks allow for a prescriptive baseline in order to explore those findings and delve into the conflicting evidence to provide a clear picture of where healthcare security stands, and where it needs to go to meet the threats posed by the cyber criminals actively hunting them.

  • Structured Writing Practices to Improve Cognition for Both Man and Machines
Structured Writing Practices to Improve Cognition for Both Man and Machines
Rob Hanna Recorded: Dec 12 2018 61 mins
The future of technical communication demands greater precision, knowledge, and discipline in how we create content across an omnichannel universe. It also requires better collaborative writing practices that will meet the need for faster delivery of information. The precision we require involves working with more granular content containing richer metadata. The topic becomes a container for these blocks of reusable content. Each block of content is written to evoke the intended reader response for that content. While these smaller blocks of content require more discipline, they are ultimately easier to write as they are more tightly focused on the need for that information.

Join Scott Abel, The Content Wrangler, and his special guest, Rob Hanna, President at Precision Content Authoring Services, for this free one-hour session. Rob will look at some of the writing and analysis techniques they use at Precision Content to enable content for both the present and future—man and machine.

Attendees will learn to see content differently from the perspective of:
–Language Arts for Information vs. Language Arts for Personal Response
–Four cognitive principles for analyzing and organizing information for better comprehension, and
–Information typing and how it relates to defining the intended reader response for that content.

How esports can combine old and new monetization models to reach new heights
Dean Takahashi, Lead Writer, GamesBeat Recorded: Dec 4 2018 60 mins
Money is pouring into esports. There are more players, more games, more viewers, and bigger prize pools — and companies are taking note. Investment is coming from all angles, and everyone is looking for a piece of the pie. But many of the existing monetization models of esports only seek to follow the tried and true formats from traditional sports.

There is a lot for the video game industry to learn from the legacy sports broadcast model; but there’s a catch: The video games industry uses some of the world’s most advanced interactive technology to create some of the world’s most compelling entertainment experiences.

So why would we just do it the same way as before? The answer? We probably won’t. Not for long at least.

In this special session, our panel of experts will unpack the old and the new of esports, and explore where genuine innovation may come from in the future. We’ll discuss how to get the most out of traditional methods, and how some companies are experimenting with new approaches to engaging with audiences and driving revenue.

Customer Success: How do you enable the mindset and infuse the culture?
Shreesha Ramdas | CEO at STRIKEDECK Dec 18 2018 10:00 pm UTC 45 mins
Customer success isn't just about a title, department, or jumping into an account manager role. It is a lifestyle. It should flow through the veins, and ooze out every pore. From the external, it appears that it comes from jumping on top of tasks and engaging with customers, but true CSM's feed their entire lives not just into their assigned customers or company customers, but every customer that they have an interaction with. This includes walking into Starbucks and holding the door open for that person behind you, or picking up the paper towels on the floor in the bathroom. Demonstrating that customer success can happen everywhere you go. It can go unappreciated, but this is also where it can catch on. Your co-workers, potential customers, and perhaps even the occasional current customer are watching. The mentality of being there to serve others is a culture shift which can catch people off guard and see the difference as to why they selected you as their vendor. So the next time you visit Starbucks, don't just walk in, but hold the door and give that person a huge high five!

Tom Johnson Jan 15 2019 4:00 pm UTC 60 mins
Trends in technical communication can be hard to decipher, even when looking at data. But one underlying trend is that technology seems to be getting more specialized and complex. This trend toward specialization is driving up the value of technical knowledge, making it more prized than writing skills. The requirement to be both specialist and generalist makes tech comm a particularly challenging field to navigate.

Join Scott Abel, The Content Wrangler, and his special guest, Tom Johnson, for this free one-hour webinar. Tom will talk about the growing complexity in the technology landscape that is ratcheting up the importance of technical knowledge in organizations, and overshadowing writing skills. Creating documentation is becoming more of a collaborative effort with engineers due to the increasing level of complexity and specialization in the technology landscape.Specialized knowledge about writing and language doesn't seem to have as much weight in the workplace as technical knowledge. Join Scott and Tom for a lively discussion about these recent trends in tech comm.

Breached businesses in Europe: Brace for more class action lawsuits. GDPR Compliance in a Data-Driven World. Insights from a 2018 Survey. Learn More. There have been countless breaches before — Facebook has even dealt with specific login bugs like this one — but the GDPR changes everything. If the company is found to have violated the rule, it could be liable for up to four percent of annual revenue, a staggering $4 billion. Under the GDPR, the question of blame largely hinges on whether the company was negligent, ignoring basic practices that could have prevented the breach. Both Facebook and Google have already come under fire for having Terms of Service that violate the regulation. Facebook is preparing for what could be the fight of its life. No one has ever litigated these issues before, and we only have a hazy sense of what a strong or weak GDPR case looks like. We’re just months into the GDPR regime, and there’s simply no roadmap for how it can be used.
