  • How Do You Measure Workplace Culture?
How Do You Measure Workplace Culture? Gary Beckstrand is VP of the O.C. Tanner Institute, Alex Lovell is Manager, Research and Measurement at the O.C. Recorded: May 17 2018 58 mins
On top of every organization’s to-do list is improving culture. Companies want to create workplace cultures that retain, engage, and attract employees, and they want to see the results of their efforts. But they also struggle with defining their culture and measuring it. It can be difficult to measure something that seems so intangible, but you can’t improve something that you can’t measure.

Companies often default to only using the metrics they can easily track: usage and satisfaction of company benefits and perks, retention, employee engagement, etc. But are these really metrics of company culture? How do you measure the true influences on your culture?

Join Gary Beckstrand, VP, and Alex Lovell, Manager of Research and Development, at the O.C. Tanner Institute as they share best practices in measuring the effectiveness of a company culture. Gary and Alex will walk through different methods for measuring your culture, which specific factors are most important to look at, and what types of questions you should be asking. They’ll also discuss the challenges of measuring culture and share stories of what successful companies have done to measure, and improve, their company cultures for maximum results.

    Join Gary and Alex to:

    - Learn the methods for measuring culture, both quantitative and qualitative
    - See the most important culture factors to look at
    - Discover the types of questions you should be asking about culture
    - Understand the challenges and complexity of measuring culture

  • Not Good Enough: The Need for a Patient-Focused Content Strategy
Not Good Enough: The Need for a Patient-Focused Content Strategy Paul Perrotta and Scott Abel Recorded: May 17 2018 62 mins
Being a patient in need of life-saving medical treatment can be cripplingly frightening—even the bravest humans often find their nerves of steel are no match for fear of invasive surgery or therapy for serious illnesses like heart disease or cancer. Many patients find themselves trapped on an anxiety-ridden ride made worse by the presence of poorly designed, ambiguous, frustrating and confusing healthcare content. Confusing jargon, misplaced focus, and a lack of empathy are common problems with information provided to patients during their journey toward healthfulness. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Join Paul Perrotta for a lively discussion with Scott Abel, The Content Wrangler, about his recent battle with brain cancer. Scott will discuss the content challenges he discovered while attempting to navigate the disorganized, inconsistent, and often less-than-useful healthcare content provided to him by hospitals, doctors, laboratories, transporters, specialists, nurses, medical device companies, technicians, pharmacies, and insurance providers.

We’ll hear Scott’s first-hand account of his experiences navigating brain surgery and cancer treatments and learn how adopting a patient-focused content strategy may help professional communicators improve healthcare information provided to those who need it. Come prepared to ask questions of Scott.

One lucky attendee will win a free pass to Information Development World conference, November 27-29, 2018, in Menlo Park, CA. The theme of the conference is “Creating a Modern Online Technical Resource Center.”

  • Work It: The Secret for Success for Women in Business Today
Work It: The Secret for Success for Women in Business Today Carrie Kerpen, Founder and CEO, Likeable Media Recorded: May 9 2018 60 mins
When Carrie Kerpen co-founded Likeable Media in 2007, the social media agency was one of the first of its kind. Six years later, when she stepped up to become CEO, times had changed. The market was crowded, the competition was fierce, and she couldn’t help but compare herself to the heads of other agencies, all of whom were pretty much the same: Loud. Extroverted. Male. In order to reinvent her company to keep up with the changing times and come out on top, Carrie had only one choice: She had to work it.

What is working it? Working it is about understanding who you are, what you want, and what you bring to the table. Working it means refusing to compare yourself to others and instead focusing on your own unique super-powers. Most important, working it is the key to unlocking the biggest secret for achieving success: There is no one right way. There is only your way.

    Key takeaways include:
•How to use your gut to make smarter decisions, faster
•How to tap into your network to help you avoid blind spots
•How to make your weaknesses work for you, not against you

Workflows associated with reviewing documents in discovery can be varied, depending on the task to be accomplished during a review, the type of information needed to conduct the review effectively and the individual’s preferred style in conducting the review. CloudNine provides the ability for users to select from three different views of the data: 1) a vertical doc list view that enables you to see the document and metadata within a single screen navigated within a sequential list of documents, 2) a native tree view list that enables a drill down based on the organization of the data loaded and 3) a table view that enables you to view the metadata for multiple records on one form and the document on another form. Is Threat Hunting the Next Frontier: Separating the Hype from the Reality Dr. James Stanger Chief Technology Evangelist, CompTIA Recorded: May 3 2018 78 mins
One of the more interesting-sounding job skills today is that of the “threat hunter.” Let’s talk about the activity of “threat hunting,” and deconstruct it a little bit. The idea behind threat hunting is to proactively look for adversaries and for traces of their activity. So, is threat hunting all that it’s cracked up to be? Is looking for trouble really the best approach today? It’s very possible that the one key element of threat hunting is one fundamental assumption: That you’ve already been hacked, but you just don’t quite realize it yet. In this presentation, James will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of “active defense,” and where it fits in with other security activities.

  • Transforming Your Workplace Culture with Purpose and Opportunity
Transforming Your Workplace Culture with Purpose and Opportunity Gary Peterson, Executive Vice President of Supply Chain, O.C. Tanner May 24 2018 4:00 pm UTC 45 mins
Imagine leading a team that is highly multicultural or multigenerational. Or a team that is largely offline, remote, or working in diverse locations—perhaps where the opportunity for raises and promotions seem slim due to company structure or the economy, or where employees don’t feel inspired by the company’s underlying purpose or reason for being?

Is it possible to build a workplace culture where every employee feels inspired by and connected to the company’s purpose? Where each team member is actively working to improve the company because they feel a sense of belonging and feed off all the possibilities to make a difference that the company’s strategy represents?

It is, if you can build trust, provide opportunities to grow and develop skills, and empower employees to do great work and be successful in their own unique ways. It starts by aligning employees’ work to company goals and giving purpose to their work. Then make sure employees have a voice, empower them to lead the way, and encourage them to be innovative.

When companies take steps toward thriving workplace cultures, they see dramatic improvements in employee engagement, innovation, retention and business performance. Just ask Gary Peterson, Executive Vice President of Supply Chain and Production, at O.C. Tanner. He was able to transform a manufacturing workforce that struggled with engagement and collaboration into a culture where employees innovate, succeed, and celebrate together.

Join Gary as he shares best practices and strategies on using purpose and opportunity to create a great place to work.

    During the webinar, you’ll:

    - Learn how to provide employees with purpose and opportunities to grow and develop even when promotions and pay raises aren’t available.
    - Gain best practices in empowering employees to innovate and do great work.
    - See a case study and results of these efforts on employee engagement, retention, and innovation.

  • Holy Trifecta of Global Content Success
Holy Trifecta of Global Content Success Val Swisher May 30 2018 5:00 pm UTC 60 mins
Technical communication professionals revolutionized the publishing world with the introduction of structured writing and intelligent content. By adopting innovative methods, approaches, and content standards, we were able to craft and deliver content to multiple channels quickly, often with reduced effort and cost. And, we’re not done yet.

When technical content is required for global audiences, intelligent content alone is not enough to tackle the obstacles multilingual content introduces. Combining structured intelligent technical content, terminology management, and translation memory together can solve these challenges. We call this the Holy Trifecta of Intelligent Technical Content. When all three of these are leveraged together, we can produce consistent content that is on-brand, on-message, and easy to read in every language.

In this session, attendees will learn:

    * A clear description of intelligent content, terminology management, and translation memory

    * An understanding of how they are interrelated and why they are important to technical communication projects

    * A game plan for coordinating all three in order to create intelligent content that works, all the time, on any device, in any language

  • The Power of Mentoring
The Power of Mentoring Jennifer Riggins Jun 13 2018 3:00 pm UTC 60 mins
This conversation features women in tech who have benefited from receiving and giving mentoring, but it's really for anyone who is looking for a hand up or to offer one. Our experts will talk about importance of mentoring — though that it's not for everyone — how to find the right mentor and mentee for you, and how it's an important part of building a career in tech.

So grab your cuppa and join the conversation for the second episode of WIT: Women in Tech! We are talking to four awesome women in tech -- Tammy Bütow, SRE (site reliability engineering) and chaos engineering specialist at Gremlin; Charity Majors, database reliability engineering and CEO and engineer at Honeycomb.io; Ana Medina, freelance SRE, infrastructure, and chaos engineering (formerly Uber); and Prima Virani, senior security engineer at Marqueta.

Their jobs in systems stability, observability, and reliability engineering benefit from a wealth of experience working with and securing those systems. But you usually have to have already worked with those systems to then be able to get jobs working with those systems -- a struggle for any junior-level job, but a particularly strong one in the tech space. This is where mentoring comes in. Each of these awesome women has benefited from being mentored and benefit from giving back and mentoring.

Join us (or sign up to listen to the recording later) to learn the best way to find a mentor or mentee/mentoree and how to leverage that relationship so you're both getting the most out of it. You'll learn about informal and formal guilds that support that mentoring, and what companies should do to facilitate these benefits. And you'll hear personal stories from these women who have built solid careers in tech on the shoulders of experience and support.
