The largest cyber attack to date was launched in May 2017. It used ransomware known as WannaCry (also WannaCrypt, WanaCrypt0r 2.0, Wanna Decryptor) to target the vulnerable computers on the Microsoft Windows operating system. The attack started on Friday and in the course of one weekend, infected more than 230,000 computers in over 150 countries, demanding ransom payments in the cryptocurrency Bitcoin in 28 languages.
