About this talk

Jason Tamara WIDJAJA (Director, Artificial Intelligence & Responsible AI Lead, Singapore IT Hub, MSD) & Pui Yan CHAN (AI Ethicist & Data Scientist Foundational Data & Analytics Singapore IT Hub, MSD) AI is becoming a ubiquitous feature in our lives, and the technology is evolving at a rapid rate – 2022 sees over 150 AI publications released every day. In parallel, research in deploying ethical and trustworthy AI has increased fivefold between 2014 and the present, with downstream legislation and regulation starting to emerge in many countries. In this context, it is crucial for technology and security professionals to understand the unintended harm that can arise from treating AI solutions like regular technology implementations, and be familiar with principles that ensure AI is used in a beneficial and human-centric way. This talk presents an overview of Singapore’s response to AI ethics and governance, with an emphasis on the Model AI Governance framework. Grounded in real-life examples of AI causing harm, the session takes the lens of translating the framework to practice to show how it mitigates AI-specific risks. Jason and Puiyan are co-authors of Singapore’s AI Ethics and Governance Body of Knowledge and contributed to the Model AI Governance framework. Jason leads a global AI lead team in MSD whose scope includes responsible AI, and Puiyan is a full time AI Ethicist.
