About this talk
“My Man Overboard training and equipment kept me alive, but my AIS saved my life.” – Andrew Taylor
On Sunday, March 30, 2014, Andrew Taylor, an amateur sailor taking part in the 9th Clipper Round the World yacht race fell overboard into the icy waters of the North Pacific Ocean… 2000 miles from the nearest land… an hour away from neighboring racing yachts… no other vessels within 1000 miles. Andrew was eventually rescued by his own racing yacht, the “Derry Londonderry Doire”, thanks in large part to an innovative search and rescue device developed by McMurdo and based on Automatic Identification System (AIS) technology.
You may have watched his dramatic ordeal featured on BBC, CNN and a number of global news outlets. Now hear Andrew Taylor tell his own story and learn more about the technology that saved his life. This presentation will include:
• An overview of AIS and its emergence as a search and rescue complement to EPRIBs and PLBs
• The history behind McMurdo's development of the world's first AIS MOB device and the future of AIS In Search and Rescue
• A live account of Andrew Taylor's amazing rescue story
• Live Q&A
We look forward to your attendance!
