IoT? How is This Still a Thing?

Presented by

Patrick Grillo, Senior Director, Security Solutions, Fortinet

About this talk

As IoT is comfortably sliding down towards the Trough of Disillusionment on the Hype Cycle, this would be a good time to look at some of the implications of rushing to embrace a new technology. The key promise of IoT was the creation of data, data that could provide greater insight into customer behavior, insight to improve internal operations, insight to reduce costs and increase efficiency and just about every other sort of snake oil claim of cheaper, better and faster. While some of the claims may have been realized, there has also been a rash of malicious cyber activity involving the use of IoT devices, both consumer and industrial, that should be a wake-up call to the mainstream organizations who are now looking at whether IoT should be part of their business strategy. This session will focus on some of the key issues surrounding IoT including connectivity, access control and above all, how to secure an existing network against devices that are essentially insecure.
