Bringing a Green Cloud Core Into 5G Networks

Building a Dynamic Network Infrastructure

Network edge computing is not just the periphery of the Telecom infrastructure, it’s also the frontier of NextGen network and service management. Unlike the bountiful resources at the core or the conceptually unlimited resources of the cloud, edge deployments are decentralized, numerous and constrained. At the edge – continuous optimization and efficiency is necessity. 

Telco edge platforms must do ‘more with less’. They have to flexibly support a wide variety of use-cases and configurations for diverse Enterprise workloads, while maintaining low-latency SLAs of public and private MEC, all within resource and power constraints of edge servers. The extreme demands of edge computing is driving innovation through the automation stack from the application layer down to the hardware, all of which will ultimately make its way back to the core and cloud for a more agile and sustainable industry.

EnterpriseWeb is leading an award-winning multi-vendor Intel 5G RAN testbed based on an secure edge gateway use-case. The testbed demonstrates dynamic configuration of Intel® Ethernet Controller E810 and network functions to optimize processing of secure packets, while significantly reducing resource requirements and energy consumption at scale. Stage 3 of the testbed incorporates Intel’s FlexRAN™ to further extend programmability. The testbed presents an open, extensible and near real-time solution for self-healing, scaling and optimizing networks.

Unleashing Security Gateway Performance in Virtualized Environments

There is an emerging interest in time-critical use cases in the areas of entertainment / multimedia, gaming, AR/VR, real-time video conferencing, vehicle to everything (V2X), teleoperated driving, and drones operated through mobile networks. These use cases require bounded low latency in conjunction with medium to high bitrates and the ability to scale across a large number of consumer devices. To meet this demand, entire networks must be optimized. Edge computing reduces transport network latency and jitter by moving data centers from the central cloud into a communication service provider’s network. In addition, 5G’s new radio (NR) network interface introduces key functional and architectural enhancements to enable time-critical services.

Still, these enhancements alone cannot fulfill the goal, and specific functionalities are needed to improve the quality of experience (QoE) for high data rate applications requiring bounded, stable, and low end-to-end latency. This calls for methods to prevent latency spikes due to queuing delays (typically caused by application data rates that are higher than what a network can serve). To fulfill latency requirements, an application must be able to adapt the bitrate to minimize the risk of increased delay while maximizing the service quality under this constraint.

In the meet-up, Ericsson and Deutsche Telekom will introduce “Managed Latency with L4S” which is a disruptive approach to provide a stable latency over mobile networks. The presentation will include:

Enabling Time-Critical Application Over 5G by “Managed Latency with L4S”

This talk discusses real-world use cases for modern workloads with Amazon Elastic Kubernetes (Amazon EKS)  Anywhere in a hybrid cloud environment.  We showcase advanced artificial intelligence technologies to train a bone marrow cell classification machine learning model from publicly available data. 

This trained model is then optimized using Intel® OpenVINO™ for inference. Then the model performance is evaluated by comparing the 2nd Generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable processor with the 3rd Generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable processor microarchitecture. We also look at application of EKS Anywhere in Telco and Edge environments.

Delivering High-Performance & Zero-Trust Security

Edge Data Center? Yeah, of course… but highly distributed edge is becoming a reality. Edge is not anymore a proof of concept that runs in a single location in a controlled environment. Real deployments customers are starting to deploy use cases that are decomposed from device to cloud and that run in thousands of different locations (e.g. 100K Road Side Units or BTS). This, per se, is already a big challenge. However; this becomes augmented by multiple facts:

1. Not reliable networks;
2. Extreme harsh conditions (thermal, dust etc.) that make systems potentially less stable;
3. Highly dynamic loads that depend on the status of where edge appliances are physically located and what workloads need (e.g. BTS or smart city cameras);
4. Thermal and energy extremes sometimes restricting compute power availability for spiky workloads.

This keynote will address the key design points and technologies that are needed to overcome those challenges and be able to address the requirements that the Edge Big Bang requires.  The technologies will cover and connect hardware and software elements such as new types of cooling systems and hardware system designs, cloud native and service life cycle management at scale.

Making Cloud Native Work for 5G Core

The foundation of this live demo is of course Varnish Enterprise, the caching engine that came out as the fastest content delivery solution in the industry during Intel’s benchmarks. Building a Private Edge-CDN Solution with Varnish Enterprise and Intel® Xeon®

As businesses of all types and sizes develop new ways to generate value from data, network topologies are evolving at an unprecedented rate.
