Next-Generation Security: Virtualizing IPS for Performance and Scale

Network functions virtualization (NFV) and cloud computing are the next generation of network-based computing, since they can deliver both software and hardware as on-demand resources. While this represents a transformation towards a much-needed flexible software-driven infrastructure, one of the significant concerns with this transformation is security.

In this web seminar, we discuss network security in a virtualized environment focusing on these key points:
•How to virtualize security applications, such as IPS/IDS, in a way that scales linearly while maintaining performance.

    Building and running 5G Disaggregated RAN, 5G Core network functions, and Edge applications are increasingly following cloud native approach with containerization and Kubernetes orchestration. Kubernetes is not new for Enterprise Industry and has mature observability tools that extract metrics, logs, and traces across multiple layers of Cloud native stacks and provide visibility. ‘Service Assurance’ term is used by communication providers to observe the state of the entire system, analyze the state, and take any closed loop actions to satisfy the service level experience to their end users. Hence the belief is that service assurance in Cloud native world shall include enhanced cloud native observability and AI frameworks and analytics applications for various use cases.

    Say, you have 5G-DU that leverage FPGA for O-RAN, FEC acceleration; 5G-UPF that leverage FPGA for UPF acceleration; or applications that leverage FPGA for ML/DL & Video encode/decode acceleration . Hence, you want to make your Edge platform expose FPGA to applications. FPGA being programmable, you like to program the FPGA with bitstream based on the application/network-function being deployed. If new application or network function is getting deployed on the node, you want to reprogram the FPGA with new bitstream. FPGA based acceleration exposure in K8s environment involves basic infrastructure setup phase and then the acceleration setup phase that is based on the type of applications being deployed. Complexity goes up when the upgrade of infrastructure (image upgrade) is required. Number of steps required in each phase could be in tens. Complexity goes up with the number of FPGAs in each node, multiple nodes in each edge and multiple edge locations. Hence, automation becomes important.

    In this webinar, we will talk about one of the most popular FPGA cards, N3000 from Intel. N3000 is used for multiple accelerations. DU vendors use FGPA to accelerate L1 processing. Analytics application vendors use it for accelerating training & inferencing.
