The Intelligent Edge -Scaling resilient virtualized services with Edge Analytics

The applications for uCPE are growing as the edge grows in importance for customers looking to take advantage of Digital Initiatives, but success with these remote deployments is dependent on cost-effective management of these systems. Brian makes the case as to why the Edge is important to BT’s enterprise customers, how customers want to use these services at the edge and why data telemetry and analytics are critical to the successful scale-out of uCPE to these customers.

Splunk offers a powerful analytics platform that enables communications service providers (CommSPs) and the enterprises that they serve to gain end-to-end visibility of their uCPE infrastructure, WAN connections, security and other applications, with automatic response when network events violate network policies.

Although SDN and NFV have been around for a number of years, there have been fits and starts due to a variety of different reasons. What’s different this time around is there’s finally an integrated solution with partners aligned, working with service providers to help solve problems. However, as IoT devices continue to grow by some estimates, to 20B+ at the edge, the need to make data-driven decisions at the edge and the ability to deploy uCPE at scale are becoming increasingly vital.

Matt highlights Splunk’s Data to Everything platform, and how his team helps turn real-time data into doing. Splunk helps service providers bring real-time data to every question, decision, and action that affects their organization so they can turn that data into successful outcomes.

Learn more about the types of analytics that customers are requiring, how is Splunk making it easy for the customers to consume that data and scale their deployments.

  • Network Disaggregation & Quality Assurance Jun 29 2021 3:00 pm UTC 60 mins
Jason Chandralal, General Manager and Laxman Patil, Senior Architect, Happiest Minds Technologies
With the advent and deployment of NFV solutions by Telco’s and Enterprises alike, NFV has provided much greater flexibility in addressing changing requirements. It also provides added control over both current and future functionality while reducing operational expenses and eliminating vendor lock-in. NFV is part of a larger trend towards Network disaggregation enabling the Telecommunications industry towards agile networks.
While Disaggregation has become standard in data centers and cloud networks, it is yet to fully penetrate the network edge. There has been a separation of hardware and software vendors, leading to the usage of white box edge switches but the complete evolution in disaggregating the hardware is still under progress.
However, advances in both software and hardware have created a robust ecosystem of networking applications that can be used as building blocks to create an industry-standard NOS for telco networks.
In such a scenario, it is crucial to have a differentiated testing and validation strategy to account for application and hardware options from multiple vendors that are all supported by a single standardized NOS with standardized interfaces running on bare metal or fully virtualized deployments models.
This webinar intends to provide technical insights about the importance of formulating a testing program tailored specifically for a DANOS (Disaggregated Network Operation System) Platform based on an Open Architecture. We would provide an overview of disaggregated systems, its associated layers, specific testing methodologies and explore test scenarios to validate DANOS using Intel hardware.

  • Introduction to a Cloud Native Approach for Packet Processing w/ Kubernetes CNI Recorded: Jun 2 2021 54 mins
    Brian Skerry, Principal Engineer, Intel
The needs for packet processing in a Kubernetes environment continue to evolve, and we have seen that many Cloud Native Functions require higher performance than offered by conventional networking solutions. To achieve the performance needs of these applications while continuing to support abstraction from the physical network interfaces, an interface called AF_XDP (Address Family - Express Data Path) is described along with potential use cases. A key part of this is to support the existing Kubernetes abstractions such as CNI (Container Network Interface), and to be based off of Linux network driver interfaces. Comparisons to existing alternatives will also be addressed.

Enterprises have started to see an increased need for edge computing, related security, and local connectivity via private 5G in addition to Wi-Fi and SD-WAN across their offices. General purpose servers (similar to uCPE) with Kubernetes orchestration seem to be the cloud of choice for the Multi Access Edge Computing (MEC) environment. Enterprises expect to use a comprehensive solution that can orchestrate and automate all the components across multiple enterprise locations (K8s clusters). In this webinar, we will present the deployment architectures for a few industries, various open source components addressing these needs, and an integrated solution to solve the problem. We will also show a demo of the OpenNESS Edge Multi-Cluster Orchestration Platform (EMCO) orchestrating Free5GC 5G Core network functions, a sample Edge-computing application, across multiple Kubernetes clusters running OpenNESS 20.12. We will also show a gNB simulator passing traffic through the 5G Core to a sample edge application. For the demo, EMCO will be demonstrated as part of the Aarna Network Multi Cluster Orchestration Platform product.

Shamik Mishra, Capgemini Engineering and R&D; Suman A. Sehra, Intel; Yousef Hawwar, Intel
5G and edge computing has the potential to generate new opportunities for industries by leveraging faster connectivity, lower latency and proximity computing. Private networks, primarily for Industry 4.0 application, will leverage 5G and edge for connectivity, AI and computer vision. These use cases need a 'connectivity-as-a-service' platform that provides 5G connectivity, hardware accelerated compute platform, simplified management interfaces, cloud native application development and frictionless developer experience. Altran's (part of Capgemini) 5G connected platform addresses these challenges by bringing together the architecture and software (e.g., 5G RAN, 5G Core and ENSCONCE edge compute platform). In this podcast, we will deep dive specifically into a smart city and automotive use case like the intelligent roadside unit and unravel the need for such platforms. We will also discuss Altran's collaboration with Intel and how we leveraged OpenVINO and parts of OpenNESS to engineer a derivative of the solution with higher performance and quality of service. Altran's 5G connected platform addresses these challenges by bringing together the architecture and software (e.g., 5G RAN, 5G Core and ENSCONCE edge compute platform).

  • 5G and MEC Service Assurance with Cloud Native Observability & AI Frameworks Recorded: Feb 9 2021 62 mins
Rajesh Gadiyar, Intel Corporation, and Partha Seetala, Robin.io
Building and running 5G Disaggregated RAN, 5G Core network functions, and Edge applications are increasingly following cloud native approach with containerization and Kubernetes orchestration. Kubernetes is not new for Enterprise Industry and has mature observability tools that extract metrics, logs, and traces across multiple layers of Cloud native stacks and provide visibility. ‘Service Assurance’ term is used by communication providers to observe the state of the entire system, analyze the state, and take any closed loop actions to satisfy the service level experience to their end users. Service Assurance, though it has many parallels with observability frameworks, needs to take few steps further due to these considerations – Distributed computing & networking across thousands of Edge & cloud locations, a higher number of network elements that constitute a service, and the need for near real-time analysis & associated closed loop actions. Hence the belief is that service assurance in Cloud native world shall include enhanced cloud native observability and AI frameworks and analytics applications for various use cases.
In this talk, we will explore few service assurance use cases, cloud native observability frameworks, 5G service assurance requirements & considerations. We will also explore at least one cloud native service assurance framework that addresses both applications and 5G network service assurance requirements.

This talk will be presented by Rajesh Gadiyar, VP, Data Platforms Group & CTO, Network Platforms Group, Intel Corporation, and Partha Seetala, Founder & CEO of Robin.io.
