DDS Technical Overview Part I - Introduction to DDS and Key Abstractions

Introduced in 2004, the Data Distribution Service has developed into a mature and proven connectivity standard within the IIoT. Today, DDS is at the heart of a large number of mission- and business-critical systems such as, Air Traffic Control and Management, Train Control Systems, Energy Production Systems, Medical Devices, Autonomous Vehicles, and Smart Cities. Considering the technological trends towards data-centricity and the rate of adoption, tomorrow, DDS will be at the heart of an incredible number of Industrial IoT (IIoT) systems.

To help you become an expert in DDS and expand your skills in the growing DDS market, Object Management Group is offering this DDS Technical Overview webinar series covering three key areas: (1) the essence of DDS and data-centric systems, (2) how to effectively exploit DDS Quality of Service to build applications that perform and scale, and (3) securing your distributed DDS system.

Part I of the OMG DDS Webinar Series will get you started with DDS. We will (1) cover in great details DDS’ key abstractions, (2) introduce the essence of DDS-based data-centric and modular architectures, and (3) clearly position DDS with respect to messaging technologies. After attending this webcast you will know the fundamentals required to start using DDS in your next project.     A patient monitoring system typically consists hundreds, sometimes thousands of interconnected physiological acquisition devices (bedside monitors), real-time clinical viewers with command and control of the ecosystem (central stations), and event annunciation (sounding clinical and system alarms) to a plurality of locations, based on caregiver workflows.     The Object Management Group is exploring potential issues and opportunities for standardization across the world of distributed ledger or Blockchain ecosystems. Many of our members have expressed concerns about the challenges in managing complex information flows that interact with different Blockchain-based technologies, for example in supply chain management. The OMG believes that some of these issues may be mitigated by the development of one or more standards in this area, and has put out a ‘Request for Information’ (RFI) to gather more information on the challenges people are facing, concerns and potential solutions to interoperability questions – see https://www.omg.org/news/releases/pr2019/10-28-19.htm

    The date for comments to be received on this is 1 February 2020.

    At this webinar we will present the insights we have gained so far and will describe what we believe are the dimensions of the interoperability problem. We believe the range of interoperability issues and potential solutions is quite broad, ranging from common semantics to technical infrastructure solutions, and we anticipate issuing at least one and possibly more ‘Requests for Proposals’ (RFPs) later in the year to capture best practice for solutions in this area.     Cloud Service Agreements (CSAs) are the series of documents that govern the relationship and obligations between a cloud customer and a cloud service provider. They contain many clauses whose impact customers may not fully understand, and they are mostly written by the providers to limit their legal and financial exposure. Knowing what to look for, what to expect, and what can be negotiated to improve the terms and conditions when the customer can leverage the competition, is very important to avoid surprises. The Object Management’s Group’s Cloud Working Group (previously known as the Cloud Standards Customer Council) recently published version 3 of “Cloud Service Agreements: What to Expect and What to Negotiate.” Our webinar will present an overview of our recommendation, with special emphasis on the changes in both technologies and business practices that motivated this update.

    In September 2019 OMG launched the BPM+ Health community – a community-of-practice focused on the development, use, and adoption of sharable clinical pathways and workflow across health care, based upon open, standards-based languages. Within the community are four “pillar” stakeholder groups, each addressing a different element of this landscape:

    Pathway Authoring, exploring how to create and document pathways and workflows using the community “Field Guide”
    Institutional Adoption, focused on ingesting pathways and putting them into practice.
    Implementation, exploring how to create software that consumes and/or produces pathways.
    Methodology, centered on the underpinning languages, formalisms, and practice patterns.

    Led by a team of experts from their respective disciplines, this webinar will recap the Community Launch event, and reveal for the first time the outcomes of the inaugural worksessions of each of these groups. It will recap the goals of the community and discuss how to get involved, and will present a high-level calendar of events for the coming year.
    Attendance is recommended for people with a general interest in healthcare business process management, for organizations deciding how and where they would like to get involved, or for prior participants to get a “pulse” on how the community is organizing.

    Topics will include:

    Community Overview and Current Status
    Workgroup Outbrief (Key discussion topics, priorities, and project plans)
    Summary of upcoming Events
