DDS Technical Overview Part II - Applying DDS QoS to Solve Real World Problems

Introduced in 2004, the Data Distribution Service has developed into a mature and proven connectivity standard within the IIoT. Today, DDS is at the heart of a large number of mission- and business-critical systems such as Air Traffic Control and Management, Train Control Systems, Energy Production Systems, Medical Devices, Autonomous Vehicles, and Smart Cities. Considering the technological trends towards data-centricity and the rate of adoption, tomorrow DDS will be at the heart of an incredible number of Industrial IoT (IIoT) systems.

To help you become an expert in DDS and expand your skills in the growing DDS market, Object Management Group offers this DDS technical overview webinar series covering three key areas: (1) the essence of DDS and data-centric systems, (2) how to effectively exploit DDS Quality of Service to build applications that perform and scale, and (3) securing your distributed DDS system.

    The Unified Architecture Framework® (UAF®) specification is used for modeling systems of systems. UAF was developed by a diverse group of tool vendors, end users, academia, and government representatives at the OMG. Its foundation in UML/SysML improves the integration between architectural framework modeling and system modeling to support post-acquisition lifecycle design and implementation.

    In a distributed system, middleware is the software layer that lies between the operating system and applications. It enables the various components of a system to more easily communicate and share data. It simplifies the development of a distributed system by letting software developers focus on the specific purpose of their applications rather than the mechanics of passing information between applications and systems.

    Software Systems, hardware systems, business systems - the mind reels at all that we are building or modernizing today. Can we possibly handle the complexity and achieve reliability? Yes, we can, by creating models. A model is a concrete representation of the often abstract, hard-to-comprehend aspects of a system. With models, we can understand requirements, analyze problems, and design solutions, whether for a system to be guilt or an existing one under study. And, crucially, we can also use models to communicate within and between teams. But clear communication requires the use of a common language backed up by a common community of practice.

    This is exactly what OMG modeling language standards provide: a broad suite of industry-defined languages, with extensive tooling support, for modeling all sorts of systems: Unified Modeling Language (UML), Systems Modeling Language (SysML), Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN), Case Management Model and Notation (CMMN) and Decision Management Model and Notation (DMN).

    But if you are new to this richness of standards, it is sometimes hard to know where to begin! this presentation will give you a concise overview of how these standards came to be, how they are being applied today and how they are continuing to evolve to meet growing user expectations. At the end of this presentation, you should feel comfortable with the breadth of modeling languages that the OMG has to offer and be ready to explore them in a bit more depth in subsequent presentations. To answer these types of questions, we need to understand how each "artifact" was created and then handled and by whom. Understanding the source and and/or process by which a piece of data was created is the lineage or "pedigree" of the data element. Understanding who has possession or custody of a data element in addition to who "owns" or has responsibility for it is the "provenance" The OMG Provenance and Pedigree Working Group has been developing a set of standards for tracking and exchanging information related to the provenance and pedigree of artifacts, whether they be data or physical objects. The OMG Data Residency Working Group published two important discussion papers in 2017: a study of Data Residency Challenges and Opportunities for Standardization, and a Data Residency Maturity Model.     Clinical practice guidelines are systematically developed statements based upon prevailing evidence to assist health practitioner’s in their decisioning making concerning the appropriate care to be provided for a specific clinical circumstance. A guideline is meant to offer concise instructions on how to provide healthcare services. The most important benefits of clinical practice guidelines are their potential to improve both the quality care and patient outcomes, and reduce costs. However, these guidelines are developped and communicated in prose, which often lacks the required specificity to clearly and unambiguously convey the clinical knowledge. These ambiguities can lead to the misapplication of intended therapy, causing at best a reduction in the quality of care and reduce costs, at worst causing harm.

    This presentation will demonstrate the use of three OMG standards, Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN), Case Management Model and Notation (CMMN) & Decision Model and Notation (DMN) to represent clinical guidelines. These methods in tandem provide a means to clearly and unambiguously describe and convey the clinical knowledge. The models can be reviewed, tested and computational verified. Further, since there are clear computation semantics for the standards, the models developed based upon these standards are potentially executable. This promotes the rapid dissemination and uptake of the guidelines in a clinical setting.

    The speakers will provide a brief overview of the three methods, supporting HL7 standards and supporting technologies necessary to make the guideline actionable in a clinical setting. A simple clinical model based upon the standards will be reviewed and finally shown executing. The presentation will show the potential of using these methods to model clinical knowledge and their potential of being directly executable.

    Introducing the OMG’s Data Residency Maturity Model

    With the rise of managed IT services and cloud computing, sensitive data is regularly moved across countries and jurisdictions, which can be in direct conflict with various international, national or local regulations dictating where certain types of data can be stored (e.g., the European Union’ General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR). Data residency is also a consideration of data owners responsible for protecting and securing data from unintended access.

    The Object Management Group® (OMG®), a technology standards consortium, launched a working group in 2015 to address the challenges of data residency and define a standards roadmap to help stakeholders manage the location of their data and metadata.

    Given the complexity of the issue, a stepwise improvement plan is necessary. This webinar will introduce a new Data Residency Maturity Model (DRMM) proposed in December 2017. Similar to the Capability Maturity Model (CMM) invented in 1990 at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI), the DRMM contains five maturity levels aimed at helping an organization improve their practices and governance of data residency. The OMG seeks feedback on the DRMM and calls on all interested parties to contribute to this work.

    SDRs provide wireless communication components whose trans¬mit and receive characteristics are realized through specialized software running on programmable platforms. The benefit of allowing a single communications platform to be rapidly reconfigured for multiple, highly-diverse communication is to multiplex receive and transmission signals of different encodings on many frequencies (each combination is called a “waveform”). SDRs handle waveforms programmatically are used in fundamentally new ways for multiple domains (e.g. C4ISR, Internet of Things, Robotics, Space, etc.). Sup¬porting several waveforms inside the same device eases bug fixing, enables field re-configurability, allows mul¬tiple data transmission standards to be supported simultaneously, and helps improve the security and integrity of communications. Any communication task can be realized instanta¬neously by uploading/downloading appropriate software that defines the necessary waveforms allowing rapid reconfiguration and upgrades of Over-The-Air Reprogrammable deployed equipment and use of Smart Antennas.

    This webinar’s purpose is to provide background and solicit interest for a revised version of the OMG Software-Based Communications Domain Task Force (SBC/DTF), called the Secure Network Communications (SNC) for Software Defined Radios (SDR) Working Group (WG).
