Enabling FAIR Data (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Re-usable) is critical for AstraZeneca to unlock value from our existing data and to ease the handling of future data. We address 'Findability' through effective indexing and cataloguing, 'Accessibility' via a blend of automated and manual processes and enhance 'Reusability' by integrating processes into approved analytical environments. Yet the most significant challenge is 'Interoperability', which requires us to determine if datasets of the same type can be merged and how to link different types to answer complex questions. Data Mesh, Data Governance and the concept of data products

Master Data Management is another buzz phrase that has been around for quite a number of years. It waxes and wanes in popularity and tends to be at the impossible end of implementation.

We all know that having our data mastered provides real business value – otherwise we would not keep hearing about “One View of the Customer” or “360 View of the Customer”. BUT typically, what happens is that someone decides MDM is needed, finds a tool and kickstarts an implementation. The very important questions may very well not have been addressed in the “ooooh shiny” process of acquiring this new tool. And if these are not asked, then the chances of success drop significantly, and you may very well end up with a less than shiny white elephant.

So, let’s get pragmatic about MDM.

    * Why does it matter?
    * What are the use cases (YEP - those very important reasons for MDM) for mastering data?
    * What kind of MDM do we want?
    * Actually - do we need a tool, or can we look at our current data landscape and do what is needed without said tool?
    * What is needed to make it happen?
    * Is there an important executive here who can not only provide the budget, but is likely to be our sponsor and cheerleader?
    * Today outcome should be: Do you want to build YOUR case for MDM (or not)!

MDM - The Case for Success

Effective Data Governance principles, policies and operating models form critical foundations for an organisation’s capability to manage, leverage and improve its data assets. The Data Governance Policies enable the organisation to leverage data as an asset, creating a strong data foundation, by implementing a shared set of roles, processes, responsibilities and vocabulary around the purpose and value of data. A Data Governance framework establishes roles and responsibilities for the participants in the organisation. These participants include senior stakeholders, Data Governance bodies (Data Owners Council, Data Stewards Forum and working groups where required), Data Owners, Data Stewards and Data Consumers. This session will walk you through an example of a Data Governance Framework. 

Garry is currently the Head of Data Governance at Vanquis Banking Group and is accountable for the design, development, and implementation of the Group’s Data Governance Framework, specifically enabling Data Owners and Data Stewards to understand their data more, whilst the Group embarks on a significant Data Transformation programme. Garry has been working in Data Governance for 17 years, both in Consultancy for EY and PWC, and in a number of financial institutions such as Barclays and Visa. Through that he has had a number of adventures and could write a book on the bad mistakes made and lessons learned.

The Union Way 2.0 – driven by data

Internet of Things (IoT) involves the interconnection of multiple devices able to capture and share data autonomously. The decrease in technology cost, availability of internet and rise in the need for sustainable ways for independent living of an aging population has given opportunity to home monitoring of individuals through smart home sensors. Information recording and transmission from these sensors, carry legal, ethical and intrusive factors but also permit a path to independent living capabilities. We will be presenting our R&D work undertaken to integrate sensors to create a smart home experience, including communication between the sensors and a bespoke home assistant for increasing interaction between the home user and the technology and access to friends and loved ones. We will discuss what the data tells us, what capabilities the future holds and how scalability means migrating from manual to automatic (machine / deep learning) pattern recognition. In the talk we will also be introducing the Cardiff University’s newly established Data Science Academy and identify opportunities for collaboration with industry partners.
