The Open Data Institute Data Decade

Presented by

Professor Sir Nigel Shadbolt BA MA (Oxon) PhD DSc, FRS, FREng, FBCS

About this talk

The last 10 years have seen an exponential growth in open and shared data, with a commensurate, huge increase in the social and economic value created. This talk will reflect on the ideas behind the development of open data as a concept and look back to the foundation, ten years ago, of the Open Data Institute(ODI). In those ten years the perception of data and its value to business and society has changed significantly. At the same time the volume and variety of data is in danger of outstripping our ability to harness its value and use it effectively, even with developments in ML and AI. I will introduce some examples of how the ODI has delivered on its mission to create 'A world where data works for everyone'. I will then look forward to the next ten years. The next decade surely presents even greater challenges and opportunities – a future in which open and shared data will have an even greater role to play.
