Infrastrukturaktien haben äußerst herausfordernde Monate hinter sich. Die Schwäche der Anlageklasse ist zu einem großen Teil sektorbedingt. Carl continues to be optimistic about the structural outlook for stock market earnings growth in Japan. This optimism is based on the dynamic of ongoing self-help as the corporate sector continues to take advantage of low-hanging fruit to increase margins and optimize both corporate structures and strategies. 

Whilst it has been a choppy start to the year for stock markets globally, Carl continues to focus on the reform thematic – something he believes is a once in a generation event for corporate Japan. 

The pressure for enhanced governance, higher margins and a better Return on Capital continues to intensify – a recent example being the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s announcement that it would demand companies trading below book value, to publish their strategies to raise their stock valuations.

This plays into our strategy of being the “shareholder of choice”. Carl will use real life examples to illustrate how “value-added shareholdership” contributes to value creation and release for our end investors.

The recent turmoil in the banking sector has led to heightened volatility across fixed income markets, with both the Federal Reserve and the Bank of England deciding to slow their pace of rate hikes in response to the crisis. Jim and Matt will discuss what all this means for bond investors, while highlighting some of the potentially compelling opportunities they are finding across the market.

While further volatility is to be expected in the near-term, the team believe that patient investors are being well-compensated for taking both interest rate and credit risk. For fixed income investors looking to minimise their exposure to interest rates during this uncertain period, the team will also outline some of M&G’s short-dated credit strategies as possible alternatives to cash products.

Opportunities in global bond markets

Emerging market equities have had their weakest year since the financial market crisis in 2022. However, the picture has brightened recently with the reopening of the economy in China after the end of the zero-covid policy, the fading shock of rising U.S. interest rates, and an easing headwind from the US dollar.
 
While many equity strategies in the emerging markets tend to be growth-oriented, we believe it could be worth taking a look at value stocks there. On the one hand, the valuations of value stocks from emerging markets currently appear extremely favourable, and on the other hand, the new environment with higher interest rates could also speak in favour of value stocks from a macroeconomic perspective. Irrespective of this, emerging markets offer a highly interesting environment for valuation-oriented investors like us, with many attractive investment opportunities to be discovered.
 
The M&G (Lux) Global Emerging Markets Fund has a clear value approach. Fund manager Michael Bourke focuses on three core criteria in his stock selection process: 1. return on capital, 2. valuation and 3. shareholder orientation. The result is a diversified value portfolio with what we believe is an attractive risk-reward profile.

Therefore, investors are currently asking themselves the following questions, among others:
- What are the reasons for emerging market equities, and, especially, value stocks?
