Defending the Depths of Cloud Data Lakes

The acquisition and utilization of data have accelerated how organizations approach both their transformative journeys and daily protection of critical corporate data; fueling the need for constant focus on innovative thought and bridging the gap between scalable, agile solutions, and evolutionary data governance. Data security has without a doubt, become one of the most critical areas for security leaders. According to Gartner: “This is driven by the growth in privacy and regulations and other legislation, as well as by the transition to cloud services…” Gartner predicts that “By 2024, 30% of enterprises will have adopted a data security platform, up from less than 5% in 2019. (Gartner, Inc 2022; 2022 Strategic Roadmap for Data Security Platform Convergence, para. 9 &11). However, “data” has also pushed the need for security across deeper tenants of the data community, seemingly fixating on the applicability of data privacy and controls within core architectural builds, such as a “data lake.” While the ingestion of data occurs on a daily basis, how the extension of the data fabric or an accompanying governing model successfully wades through a multitude of questions such as: once an organization has gathered its data, how does it ensure the data remains secure?
