Intent-driven cloud management for VDI and 5G-slicing services

An increasing number of CSPs are embracing the cloud paradigm for their digital transformation across all major systems: operations support, business support, and telco network. Whether they use private clouds, public clouds, or combinations thereof, making wise use of cloud resources is key for cost- and energy-efficiency, but at the same time poses great challenges. Between the cloud user and the cloud provider -whether being part of the same organization or not- a significant gap has been traditionally existing: when requesting a cloud service, like a network function or an analytics workload, the cloud user needs to declare their “intent” about functional and non-functional requirements of the service (e.g. performance, security, or reliability requirements). In turn, the cloud provider needs to decide the specific cloud resource configurations that meet the cloud user’s intent. In other words, the cloud provider needs to translate the user’s intent (“what”) into “how” the service is implemented. Translation of intent into cloud resource configurations involves understanding both the cloud applications’ workload patterns, the underlying cloud resource configuration patterns, and most importantly, the complex relationship between the two. What is more, the dynamic behavior of applications during runtime, the increasing variety of service goals, and the growing number of possible resource configurations, further complicate the decision-making process. In this talk we will show our approach to address these challenges by developing an intent-driven cloud management solution to assist the cloud provider with decision making on cloud computing (CPUs, memory, disk) and cloud infrastructure (CPU frequency, processor cache, memory bandwidth) resources, to meet the cloud performance goal, i.e. the intent.
