With extra stimulus coming through from China and the US, Trevor Greetham, Head of Multi Asset, considers the prospect of a fourth ‘mini cycle’ following the 2018 slowdown as the record-breaking US economic expansion continues. Trevor also notes some short term risks as we enter the usually volatile summer period, but will be looking to buy dips as signs build for a new acceleration of the world economy into next year.
  • Multi asset quarterly review Recorded: Jul 11 2019 38 mins
    Trevor Greetham
At ten years this is the longest expansion in the US economy since records began in 1857 and yet a recession does not look to be imminent. Trevor Greetham shares insights into this historic phenomenon, using his Investment Clock approach to explain why we could be about to embark on a fourth ‘mini cycle’ upswing triggered by a new round of monetary easing. This line of reasoning suggests the next global downturn could be as far away as 2021. Investors should brace themselves for continued volatility though. Geopolitical risk could yet derail the world economy if the trade war intensifies or military conflict disrupts the flow of oil from the Middle East.

Trevor Greetham, Head of Multi Asset provides his latest review and outlook. The Multi Asset funds we manage are moderately overweight in equities and high yield bonds with a tilt towards America and the Emerging Markets within our equity exposure.

As a result of the world economy continuing to slow down and inflationary pressures disappearing with the collapse of oil prices last year, our Investment Clock model is in reflation with low inflation and central banks looking at least to defer any rises to interest rates.

Brexit uncertainty remains so we continue to view this as something we should hedge rather than take big positions on.

    Trevor Greetham
Head of Multi Asset, Trevor Greetham, highlights three areas as the investment clock continues to move from the stagflation into the reflation stage of the business cycle. With lots of reasons why markets dropped and investor sentiment extremely depressed Trevor still sees some positive signs that 2019 could start off on a slightly firmer footing, with a US recession not as close as some may have predicted. With the Brexit outcome still impossible to foresee, Trevor believes that a focus on diversification is key rather than trying to pick winners.
