Schools educate our nation's future so school administrators must navigate numerous challenges outside their control. With a reported 67 million malware attacks against education institutions during a typical 30-day stretch, one major challenge is that K-12 institutions easy targets for cybersecurity attacks. These attacks have risen since the Covid-19 pandemic forced remote learning, and a new form of highly evasive adaptive threats (HEAT) using multi-vector attacks has arisen as a primary source of these offenses. Staying a Step Ahead of Bad Actors in State, Local Cybersecurity

Ransomware continues to be one of the single biggest threats to government networks, and IT professionals are increasingly worried about employees who work remotely ignoring security guidance and clicking on malware-infested links or attachments. Their concerns are justified, particularly regarding highly evasive adaptive threats that target web browsers and take active measures to avoid detection by current-generation security. These attacks have increased by more than 220% in the past year and can target worker credentials as a precursor to launching a ransomware attack.

Those concerns are well-founded according to a new survey, which reports that one-third of respondents said they experience a ransomware attack at least once a week – with nine percent saying they are attacked more than once a day. And IT security professionals fear they can’t keep up with the increased rate of attacks. Public sector professionals, including state and local agencies, were the third-largest group to participate in the survey.

Defending Against Ransomware Attacks in Today’s Threatscape

Remote workers need access to internal data and applications through a VPN, and they also need access to the Internet. Today’s security architecture requires that all traffic be sent back to HQ over a VPN, which does not have the capacity to handle the surge of an anywhere workforce.

The obvious solution is to send web traffic directly to the Internet, but this approach exposes employees to common cyberthreats, such as drive-by exploits, malware, phishing, etc. A VPN split tunnel using a global cloud proxy is the better approach. It provides remote users with the same security as if they were working in the office and reduces VPN bandwidth by more than 70 percent.
