In collaboration with the Nickel Institute, Dr. Graham Sussex, foremost expert in corrosion and failure investigations, will explore how stainless and nickel alloys can deliver good heat transfer efficiency.

Most commonly, thermal efficiency and its related cost are the basis of heat transfer designs of commercial and industrial plant and equipment. Simple thermal conductivity is a factor in heat exchangers but it is not significant compared to scaling or fouling caused by corrosion or flow design issues. Economisers and condensing boilers are particular designs where chasing efficiency can lead to significant corrosion unless temperatures and fluid flows are carefully analysed.

The metals and mining industry can be challenging. The key challenges often include:
- Exploring a new region and trying to get up to speed with the geology of the area

- Trying to get more insights into the (geochemical, geophysical, geological) properties of a certain mineral deposit in my study area, including the geometry and dimensions

- Trying to find as much peer reviewed scientific information as possible on best practices of extraction for the mineral deposit.
 
- Making data useful is time-consuming and there are quality concerns due transcribing data and manual formatting (e.g. cropping maps manually from articles and georeferencing, copying tables from PDF into excel format).

In addition, geoscientists have many questions they need answered such as:
Are there mineral deposits? 
- Are there mineral resources?
- Are there mineral reserves?  

What does that deposit look like?
- What are the geochemical, geophysical and geological properties ?
- What is the geometry of the deposit? 
- How much mineral reserves are there?
- Can we get to it and what is the best method of extraction? At what cost?

Getting ahead of these challenges and questions can be simplifed when companies have all the necessary information to make decisions and mitigate risks.

Overcoming Challenges in Metals and Mining

International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that about 40% of the full lifetime costs of an offshore wind project, including construction and maintenance, have significant synergies with the offshore oil and gas sector (IEA, Offshore Wind Outlook, 2019).
