Success takes teamwork. No one can do it all on their own and interacting with new people is important. We never know who we might meet and the effect they may have on our professional life and career.
Nurturing key relationships that can facilitate career and personal development is what all successful people do. And they build this network continually and consistently.
How can you build a network of mentors, advisors and contacts and what’s the best way to go about doing this? Business psychologist Darryl Howes MSc will provide practical tips and advice, with insight drawn from social science and a 30-year career in financial services.

Darryl helps professionals develop networking and career management strategies. He holds a First Class Honours undergraduate degree and a Masters in Organisational Psychology from the University of Surrey, UK. A visiting lecturer and speaker for City University, the University of Surrey Careers Service and Aston Business School, he has also worked extensively with organisations such as The Institute of Leadership and Management and The Institute of Directors. He has written for a range of publications including People Management (CIPD), Financial Management (CIMA) and the ILM publication, ‘Edge’.
A past National Executive Committee member of The Division of Occupational Psychology of the British Psychological Society, Darryl was nominated for the 2016 CIPD/People Management Power List for Learning & Development professionals, naming the top 20 bloggers, tweeters and all-round social media powerhouses. In 2017/2018, he was selected as a Personal Mentor under Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s QYL initiative, one of only 60 worldwide.

This joint Chartered Banker Institute/Chartered Insurance Institute webinar will consider the future of skills in financial services, and especially how the work of the new Financial Services Skills Commission working alongside financial services organisations, professional bodies and others will help to close the skills gap in UK financial services.
In response to a call from G20 leaders, the Financial Stability Board established the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) to enhance transparency on the financial risks to investors from climate change which have subsequently published guidelines for voluntary, consistent climate-related financial risk disclosures covering the physical, liability and transition risks associated with climate change. Scenario analysis is being recommended as an important tool to assess the potential implications of these climate related risks and opportunities. However, a TCFD survey found that companies find scenario analysis the most challenging aspect of TCFD, due to a lack of data, and a lack of standardised metrics and targets. As such, companies have often avoided disclosing the results of scenario analysis, and the assumptions that have fed into the process.
With data gaps acting as a barrier for better climate-related scenario analysis and disclosure, financial services firms have been seeking alternative sources. The ability of satellites to deliver global data on the Earth system, providing long-term and consistent Earth Observation (EO) datasets enable identification of significant trends and patterns. The talk will cover the range of space-enabled climate datasets and tools, often used in combination with other data sources, that can support quantitative scenario analyses and thus enable financial services firms to better analyse their climate risk, disclose their exposure and assess impact of green investment in a more robust and meaningful way.
