It’s been a year since we launched Schroder ISF* Global Managed Growth in South Africa. While the fund is new, our approach to multi-asset investing is not. Schroders launched its first balanced mandate more than 73 years ago and today multi-asset accounts for almost a third of our assets under management (as of 31 December 2020).    

Designed specifically for local investors looking for a flexible, multi-asset portfolio, the Global Managed Growth fund aims to provide long-term capital and income growth by investing in a diversified range of global assets and markets.

Join us as we look back at a year of unprecedented change and discuss what’s worked for well for the strategy. Bargain Hunting in a Bull Market: Extreme Markets and Extreme Opportunities

China has shown the dedication and desire to be at the forefront of economic globalisation. Historical decisions have been taken to open up the market to the rest of the world, which is happening now. Furthermore, there is a lot of focus on the domestic case for China and how to access via public or private equity.

This session will begin by setting the backdrop to China, providing a macroeconomic update and outlook. Following this we will discuss the A-share market, its characteristics and opportunities for investors. We will then take a deep-dive into the dynamic RMB/USD private equity market and look at growth drivers and opportunities.

The Covid-19 crisis has been a structural whirlwind and has highlighted the importance of sustainability analysis, measurement and engagement. According to our research, those companies behaving responsibly towards their employees or redirecting capacity to social challenges to support public relief efforts have outperformed.

Hannah Simons, Head of Sustainability Strategy will dig deeper into this and look at the six ways in which the corporate world will have to change in response to the challenges of a post-Covid world and assess which sectors and companies are likely to emerge less scathed, both from the crisis and other “black swan” events.

Robin Parbrook, Fund Manager & Co-Head of Asian Equity Alternative Investments, discusses some of the long-term trends that Covid-19 has accelerated and further entrenched in the Asian equity market. He also contemplates what the world might look like in 2030 and considers some of the near-term risks from potential bubbles and inflation in the region.

Sustainability: we know it matters but how do we approach it?

The update on the vaccine is fantastic news. The extraordinary share price moves, however, were really a reflection of just how polarised markets have become this year. When markets are all pointing the same way, history tells us that it often ends in significant pain for those that have put all of their eggs in one basket. We do not profess to know when the tide will turn for a prolonged period, only that the ongoing extreme polarisation, with a handful of stocks and sectors being preferred at the expense of all else, is unsustainable.  

Our view remains constant: valuation matters, and good companies that have been shunned by markets are the most reliable source of our returns for clients.
