With the IMF recently revising global growth expectations upwards, the world economy appears to be emerging from the ravages of COVID-19, courtesy of widespread vaccine roll-out and generous fiscal packages. These measures however, are not failsafe, with vaccines still in short supply in many regions and fiscal packages stoking rising yields and inflation fears.
With the prospect of a multi-speed economic recovery ahead, Karen Watkin provides her insights on what investors should focus on over the next 12 months, possible bumps in the road to recovery and where the best investment opportunities can be found.
If we had to find an adjective for this year, we would choose the adjective anomalous. This year we have encountered a new situation that is not only affecting our investments but also our private life and our way of living. COVID-19 has resulted not only in volatility in the markets but also in a paradigm shift in how we view our investments. This impact has affected certain sectors differently but above all it has brought uncertainty. What we are clear about is that health comes first, but also the climate or society. At today's event we will have the pleasure of listening to our manager Dan Roarty, portfolio manager of our AB Sustainable Global Thematic Portfolio fund that focuses on these three themes and on how we believe in a sustainable world following the UNSDGs.

Necessity drives innovation, and recent events have caused a reset in peoples’ behaviour, necessitating a permanently elevated role for technology innovation. Only technological innovation can help provide agile, robust, nimble and affordable solutions in digital media, cloud-based infrastructure, the connected world, or the way we discover diseases and treatment. As we move towards a post-COVID world, technology is becoming the most important economic infrastructure for our everyday lives. Join AB’s Lei Qiu and Vinay Thapar, portfolio managers for the AB International Technology Portfolio and the AB International Healthcare Portfolio, as they discuss how to find companies that can address today’s needs and become tomorrow’s winners.

Nicholas Davidson - Senior Portfolio Manager—Equities
Some commentators warn that equity markets are in a bubble. Others see plentiful upside from the prospect of economic recovery and continued policy support. In this webcast, AB’s Equity Senior Portfolio Manager Nicholas Davidson will examine the arguments and highlight some of the areas offering the best equity opportunities today: from a style and regional perspective the most rewarding prospects in 2021 may not necessarily be 2020’s winners.

As the world looks forward to a new year with fresh hope for beating the pandemic, we set out our economic scenario for 2021. While optimism is growing, with the global economy expected to bounce back in the short-term, COVID-19 has, if anything, intensified the longer-term secular challenges and trends faced by the world prior to the pandemic’s outbreak: debt, populism and deglobalization.
As we look forward to the new year, our investors will highlight likely sources of attractive returns amid a challenging landscape of high valuations, low interest rates and ever shifting risks. Tighten your seatbelts for an exciting year ahead!

With recent positive news around successful vaccine development and the US election outcome now widely known, 2021 is likely to be a year of continued economic recovery, supported by low interest and governments’ fiscal stimulus programmes. Uncertainty is here to stay, however, driven by the evolution of the COVID-19 situation combined with the transition of administration in the US.
How should investors position for a post-COVID world? In our webinar, we will discuss our three key investment ideas for 2021.

In today’s markets, risk is a moving target. Even with strong policy forces supporting equity gains, sources of volatility are numerous. Kent Hargis and Sammy Suzuki, Portfolio Managers AB Low Volatility Equity Portfolio, will address how risk across many industries changed post-covid.
Portfolio managers who aim to mitigate risk must be prepared to shift their defensive formations regularly and to look in new directions for stocks that can help anchor stability in an allocation as the risk landscape changes. Over the long term, we believe a dynamic defensive strategy can help fuel an offense during volatile market episodes. We continue to look for companies that offer a combination of quality and stability at attractive prices; the three core elements underpin our investment philosophy.
