#SciValFest2020 - KE: How industry uses bibliometrics to inform collaborations

Some of the current scientific challenges that we are attempting to solve are so large that we need to engage multi-disciplinary teams across a variety of organisations in order to make progress. All technology driven companies will access, at least partly, new innovations and thinking from universities, research institutes and other technology led companies. No single company has the full spectrum of skills and technology required within their organisation to solve complex scientific challenges. How do you choose your collaborating partners?Academic and industrial scientists publish their research in peer reviewed journals and impactful papers may be measured by the number of times that they are cited in other publications. The FWCI rankings give an indication of where certain research groups sit within their respective scientific community; this is true for both academic and industrial scientists.Research has shown that scientific teams who collaborate internationally tend to have more impactful publications; similarly, those academics who collaborate with industrial scientists tend to have a higher FWCI.This presentation will explore this in more depth and give an insight into the criteria that industry use when engaging academic collaborators.
