Tom joined Evelyn Partners in 2021 after more than 10 years working in the Big Four. He
has extensive experience in advising corporate clients, from start-ups to large multinationals
across a variety of sectors, on employment tax, reward and global mobility related matters.

Michael Beard – Associate Director, Business Tax
Michael has worked with a wide variety of businesses, ranging from fast growth fintech
companies through to well established, global groups. He has assisted on a wide variety of
international projects, and is well connected within CLA Global, in order to draw upon a
global tax network. Michael’s primary focus is transfer pricing, but he also has experience in
complex cross border structuring and transactions, financing, and intangibles. He also spent
three months on secondment with a large UK challenger bank, and therefore has an insight
into the challenges faced by fast-growth enterprises.

and what can fintech businesses do to ride out a potential recession linking into any
pertinent announcements from the budget that will be affecting fintech businesses.

The fintech sector has been one of the UK’s most dominant sectors for funding.  However,
2022 was a challenging year for fintech, similar to many other industries – the rise in inflation
and interest rates has dampened tech valuations globally and brought about a growing focus
on profitability and a sustainable business model. Added to this, with the upcoming Budget
on the 15 March there is uncertainty of what this will bring to the fintech sector, in particular
the large changes to the R&D scheme – a vital lifeline for many fintech companies.
Investors will continue to focus on profitability and will be keen to back businesses that can
demonstrate a clear ‘road to profitability’. 

With fundraising expected to continue to be challenging, we expect some form of M&A consolidation in the sector. Fintechs will need to continue focusing on cutting down on discretionary spend and would need to have a razor focus on products and services that can generate positive unit economics.

The Budget & Challenging Fundraising Environment

On 7 February 2023, the Bank jointly published a Consultation Paper with HM Treasury on the digital pound, a UK central bank digital currency (CBDC).

The digital pound would be a new form of digital money issued by the Bank, for use by households and businesses for their everyday payments needs. The consultation paper notes that the digital pound is likely to be needed in the future, but does not yet make a decision on whether to build one.
