With ever-persisting questions over the path of interest rates, 2025 is likely to be another turbulent year for bond markets. In this uncertain environment, we believe there is a strong risk/reward opportunity in short dated credit. Offering the potential for similar returns to more traditional corporate bonds but with less volatility, we believe this defensive asset class offers an attractive proposition to those hesitant to make a duration call.

 

While calling the top and the bottom of the cycle can be beneficial, this is difficult to do. Instead, having a structural allocation to short dated investment grade bonds, combined with a more traditional corporate bond allocation makes sense, in our view. Furthermore, the case for active management in this asset class is strong as fixed income markets are inefficient, creating opportunities for active investors to exploit.
