Women make up only 37% of the tech workforce at entry level, and this percentage drops with each incremental advance in their careers. This series will outline the current state of the tech industry, the challenges women are facing in hi-tech careers, as well as shed light on the opportunities that are opening up for women in tech.

Machine learning advancements have grown rapidly in the last few years. However, machine learning is heavily dependent on data, as machine learning models are trained on vast datasets that are then used to provide insight or draw conclusions. This reliance on data means that machine learning can be subverted by an adversary who is able to manipulate even just a small portion of the data.

This talk will provide an overview of what adversarial machine learning is and details on some categories of vulnerabilities. Additionally, this talk will provide a list of things to think about when using or developing machine learning models.

Adversarial Machine Learning: What is it?

Join us as Gloria D’Anna – co-chair of SAE G32 JA7496 on CyberPhysical Systems takes us through an overview of this standard, along with the illustrative example on the Electric Vehicle Illustrative Example. We’ve been able to work with SAE to provide a video on how to utilize this standard. We’ve selected Electric Vehicles as an illustrative example, as (1) it’s timely and (2) it’s something that we can easily talk about – unlike some other items in the Aerospace / Department of Defense world. What is Generative AI and What are the Security Considerations?

Space systems provide many critical functions to the military, federal agencies, and infrastructure networks. Space Policy Directive-5 Cybersecurity Principles for Space Systems describes the cyber threat to space systems and the need for these systems to be secure and resilient against cyber-attacks. Cyber defenses for space systems must be implemented in size, weight, and power (SWAP)-constrained, real-time operating environments that cannot tolerate increased latency and other common detrimental side-effects of cyber defenses. 

In this webinar, WiCyS strategic partner Sandia National Laboratories will discuss these challenges. They have been researching moving target defenses (MTD) to protect space systems against cyber-attacks. MTDs create dynamic, uncertain environments on space systems and can be used to defeat cyber threats against these systems. Furthermore, MTDs do not require the detection of an adversary to mitigate the effects of an attack.

Moving Target Defense for Space Systems

Cyber attacks are rising against critical infrastructure systems and have serious implications for our national security. In addition, many interconnected systems are becoming increasingly cyber-physical due to modernization efforts. For example, the electric grid has rapidly evolved with smart grid technologies, wide-area monitoring capabilities, and advanced automation. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the impact of multi-hazard events such as cyber-attacks and extreme weather on these cyber-physical systems.

In this webinar, WiCyS strategic partner Sandia National Laboratories will discuss approaches for incorporating cyber-physical analysis in electric grid response and defense mechanisms for increased situational awareness, improved response, and resilience. This will include ongoing research and development overviews for cyber-physical anomaly detection, cyber-physical data fusion, cyber-physical mitigation deployment, and characterizing cyber-physical system interdependencies.
