The Industry IoT Consortium is a global, member-supported, organization that promotes the accelerated growth of the Industrial Internet of Things by coordinating ecosystem initiatives to securely connect, control and integrate assets and systems of assets with people, processes and data using common architectures, interoperability and open standards to deliver transformational business and societal outcomes across industries and public infrastructure.

Governments, social scientists, technologists, and even the heads of AI organizations are expressing concerns about the potential misuse of the power unleashed by Foundation Models and Generative AI. Many nations and organizations have already started taking steps to regulate this powerful technology to prevent possible misuse and disruption of the societal fabric. Fear and concerns are synonymous with the approach toward nuclear technology worldwide. 

The teams of the Object Management Group (OMG) Responsible Computing Initiative launched a Tiger team to study and evaluate the potential concerns regarding Generative AI Techniques (GAIT) and recommend ways to channel the capabilities of GAIT responsibly to benefit society. 

Specific objectives include investigations on how to:

- Instill trust and reduce bias in the data used to build GAI models.
- Recommend proper and ethical use of AI models whilst protecting the intellectual rights of authors, artists, and other professionals.
- Regulate the proliferation of AI models to ensure no disruptive effects on employment, society, and the environment.
- Educate the consumers, administrators, and governmental bodies on the dangers and limitations of excessive use of AI models.

The different tracks of this initiative are:

• Ensure trustworthy Generative AI Models, which must be based on accurate and unbiased data.
• Impact on the Labor market, especially many white-collar jobs like copywriters, interpreters, and even professionals like investment advisors, editors, lawyers, customer support professionals, creative writers, doctors, etc.
• Issues related to IP, copyright violation, ownership, royalty, etc.
• Impact on the environment with the power-hungry deep learning process to build(train) GAI models.

Michael Linehan (OMG) and Cheranellore Vasudevan (IBM) will present their thoughts as they start their work on this initiative.

Because of this, practitioners have the impression that patterns are of no practical use and are more something for academia. However, this is wrong. Architectural patterns or design patterns can be very helpful when it comes to solution design, especially in complex environments or new domains.

Practical Use of Patterns in Internet of Things Systems

We’ve all heard of the various cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, which rely on distributed ledger technologies (DLTs), such as blockchain, to provide decentralization and immutability. Industrial companies use DLTs for everything from shipping-container tracking, vehicle identity and history, to energy trading and farm-to-store tracking. But what about the operational impact of these peer-to-peer distributed ledgers on the service provider network, for example, in terms of network load? Are there certain architectures that work better than others? Conversely, are there any opportunities for service providers to leverage DLT’s to provide additional services or improve the network’s overall performance, for example, managing routing state, user membership information, or others? We analyze here how blockchains affect a service provider network.

Impact of Distributed Ledgers on Provider Networks

Digital transformation is fostering the evolution of the manufacturing industry, entering a new era of smart manufacturing. Manufacturers face challenges in integrating systems across manufacturing hierarchy, domain boundaries, and lifecycle phases. To benefit from the full potential of smart manufacturing, it is vital to take a realistic and stepped approach for manufacturing improvements. Improving the ROI and making smart manufacturing happen with an applicable implementation roadmap. The article illustrates the interconnecting process in smart manufacturing and introduces the Smart Manufacturing Kaizen Level (SMKL) to build up the capability at various stages of the implementation of DX. The article also provides actual lessons learned case studies, such as empowering workers' productivity and integrating OT and IT, to show the effectiveness of utilizing maturity performance management and capturing the values in smart manufacturing.
