Orchestration Patterns for Microservices with Messaging by RabbitMQ

Companies looking to speed up their software development are adopting microservices architectures (MSA). Building applications as groups of smaller components with fewer dependencies helps companies such as Comcast, Capital One, Uber, and Netflix deliver more frequent releases and thus innovate faster.

An important consideration in adopting an MSA is deciding how individual services should communicate between each other. Adding a message queue such as RabbitMQ to handle interservice messages can improve communication by:

- Simplifying our services so they only need to know how to talk to the messenger service.
- Abstracting communication by having the messenger service handle sophisticated orchestration patterns.
- Scaling message throughput by increasing the cluster size of the messenger service.

    Continuous integration is the automation of building and testing new code. Development teams that use CI can catch bugs early and often; resulting in code that is always production ready. Compared to manual testing, CI eliminates a lot of toil and improves code quality. At the end of the day, it's those code defects that slip into production that slow down teams and cause apps to fall over.

    Why all of the recent buzz around event-driven architectures? Software solutions have implemented event-driven patterns for some time, using message brokers such as RabbitMQ or ActiveMQ. Use of these message brokers is so ubiquitous that every J2EE platform such as WebSphere or WebLogic embeds one.

    What is new is that we are reexamining event-driven approaches in the context of microservices. On the one hand, microservices don’t change things too much—the scenarios that called for message queuing in the past remain. Where eventing starts to get interesting is when we start applying it to scenarios we once used a request/response model. We can turn the processing on its head by propagating events through a network of microservices. Doing so can yield more autonomous microservices and more resilient systems.
