How did we get here? Platforms and the developer experience gap

Since its publication, Stephen O’Grady’s blog post describing the developer experience gap has become a guide, informing strategies for application development products, tools, and programs, by end-users and vendors alike. In the now iconic post O’Grady points out that while developers today have a “robust” range of tools for testing, building, integrating and deploying their code to production, they are also being asked to build and maintain them. In our attempts to reduce points of friction in the development process, we’ve neglected the overall experience. We’ve not really created an experience where all these tools work in concert. To be sure, the combined evolution of containers, cloud computing and PaaS has facilitated this experience gap. By the same token, platforms have a role in fixing it.
