Transformation is a constant in procurement. Just as business is changing and procurement has to adapt to that, there’s a persistent transition from different structures and different deployment of technology and talent that means executives are never sitting still. Moreover, the journey from cost-cutting procurement to a sophisticated, business-centric function is a long one with many stages —there’s rarely a straightforward path to follow. Measuring progress and demonstrating tangible value to internal customers requires a clear plan and careful alignment of goals with the business strategy. Yet successful functions often follow a familiar pattern: doing more with less, embedding with key internal partners, matching KPIs, opening lines of communication, tracking value in terms of revenue and cost avoidance.
