HIPAA Compliance Town Hall: Auditing in the AWS Cloud

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) requires different rules in the cloud era for staying compliant when it comes to dealing with Protected Health Information (PHI). As a result, IT leaders must adhere accordingly when operating on a public cloud infrastructure, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), to prevent potential violations and monetary fines.

In this live virtual co-panel discussion by AWS, CorpInfo, and CloudCheckr, we will explore:

- What rules affect HIPAA compliance and governance in the cloud and who must comply

- Why HIPAA compliance requires continuous monitoring and logging of network and information assets

- How to achieve HIPAA compliance with AWS HIPAA Quick Start

- Why organizations need to know and understand AWS’ Shared Responsibility Model to remain compliant in the cloud

- How tools can help validate your security posture and support auditing requirements

  • 2018 RI Planning for AWS and Azure Recorded: Dec 14 2017 34 mins
Marit Hughes, Billing Solutions Architect/SME and Todd Bernhard, Product Marketing Manager
As 2017 comes to a close, you may have budget that falls under “use it or lose it.” If so, consider purchasing a credit towards discounted Reserved Instances for 2018 and beyond! RIs from AWS and more recently Microsoft Azure are a great way to save up to 75% compared to On Demand rates, as long as you know you’ll have a long-term need. You can use that end-of-year budget surplus to make an up-front payment towards a one or three year commitment, making your monthly cloud spend much less.

    In this webinar, attendees will:
-Learn how to decide between the various types of RIs including Standard and Convertible
-Understand the terms and payment options
-Explore the tools available to make informed recommendations

  • How Public Cloud and Automation are Making an Impact in Government Recorded: Dec 7 2017 60 mins
Phil Bertolini, CIO, Oakland County, Michigan; Jeff Kushner, CMO at Allgress; Patrick Gartlan, CTO, CloudCheckr
For some government agencies that are just starting their cloud journey, the road ahead can seem daunting. It’s a stark contrast from the old way of buy IT, one that allows agencies to invest in technology as a service rather than accumulating more hardware and software.

But cloud adoption doesn’t happen in a vacuum. There is a lot of preparation and planning to decide what your IT environment will look like post-cloud migration and into the future. One of the topics that’s being discussed among agencies is how to automate processes once they’re available in a cloud environment. That can add yet another wrinkle to the complexities of cloud.

But the long-term benefits often outweigh the short-term challenges, experts argue. That was the topic of conversation at GovLoop’s recent online training, “How Public Cloud and Automation Are Making an Impact in Government.” The panel included Phil Bertolini, CIO and Deputy County Executive of Oakland County, Michigan; Jeff Kushner, Chief Marketing Officer at Allgress; and Patrick Gartlan, Chief Technology Officer at CloudCheckr.

  • Security by Design – Modernizing Technology Governance Recorded: Oct 12 2017 33 mins
Tim Sandage, Sr. Security Partner Strategist, AWS
Up-front design of your cloud environment can be done in a way that creates a reliably secure and controlled environment no matter how the AWS resources are used. This session will focus on "Security by Design" principles and show how an AWS environment can be configured to provide a reliable operational security control capability across, such as:

    - Organizational governance
    - Asset inventory and control
    - Logical access controls
    - Operating system configuration
    - Database security
    - Applications security configurations

    Why this session:

Cloud Computing is becoming the new normal, the question isn’t “if” anymore, it’s really just “how fast can we move?” and “what are we going to move first”

Because of this trend organizations need to understand their security and compliance capabilities and shared responsibilities for security as they migrate resources to the cloud. Whether its clinical trial simulations with Bristol Myers-Squibb, who uses AWS to run clinical trial simulations for 64% less cost; in 1.2 hours vs. 60 hours or Galata Chemicals who are running their development and test workloads in the cloud. Organizations need to start with a “Secure by Design approach, which support security at scale as they increase their use of cloud resources.”

  • Game, Set, Match: Leveraging Compliance as a Competitive Advantage Recorded: Oct 12 2017 13 mins
Todd Bernhard, CloudCheckr Product Marketing Manager
This talk will focus on how compliance can be transitioned from a costly manual burden to a business enabler using automation. One of the biggest challenges faced by organizations today is the use of manual methods like spreadsheets and email for compliance management. This long-time practice is unable to keep pace with the myriad of workflows and processes required which leads to constant firefighting, fines, increased cost and loss of accountability. Adopting an automated platform brings the benefits of being compliant in less time using a streamlined assessment process with better business alignment, accountability, higher profits and lower costs.
