Thematic Investing Series 3: Strategic or tactical thematic portfolios

While thematic investment is new and exciting, investors should still try to follow the key investing principles in portfolio management. Whether investors are using thematic investment strategically or tactically, building a coherent, fit for purpose thematic sub-portfolio is key to success. In most cases, a well-thought-out combination of thematic investments will deliver better results than a single investment.

In this webinar, we will examine two different approaches to thematic investing, trying to maximise their impact and leveraging their growth potential:
• Strategic Approach, focusing on the advantages of diversification
• Tactical Approach, combining innovation with well-established principles to deliver better overall results.

Thematic investments promise to harness long-term growth by turning structural, world-changing shifts into compelling investment opportunities. While rife with potential, these new investment strategies also create risks for investors as they force us to rethink how we evaluate these tools in the context of fund selection and asset allocation. Across this series, we will look at the investment process in its entirety and propose adjustments that would allow investors to harness the power of megatrends through thematic investments.

Other webinars in this series:
• Understanding the Thematic Universe - The WisdomTree Thematic Classification
• Selecting thematic funds – Five criteria to separate the wheat from the chaff?

With the rise of new asset classes amid the pandemic, is it time to consider adding new exposures? With the notable social impact the health pandemic has caused, many bond investors are considering refreshing their portfolios to add more ESG-friendly bond allocations. The European Union has taken a lead by becoming one of the largest social bond issuers in the world and taken major steps towards providing clarity on sustainable bonds issuance across Europe. As a major issuer of social and green bonds, what could European Union (EU) bonds do for your portfolio?

In this webinar we will look at:

+ How will the EU transform the European bond universe in the years to come?
+ Why are so many investors considering EU bonds amid the pandemic?

Nitesh Shah, Research, WisdomTree | John Mulligan, Climate Change Lead & Market Relations, World Gold Council
The gold value chain stretches from miners to refiners to end consumers: investors, jewellery customers and industry to name a few. When thinking about Environmental, Social and Governance there is a wide scope for consideration.

In this webinar we will be joined by The World Gold Council (WGC), who will take us through their Responsible Gold Mining Principles (RGMPs) which is a framework that sets out clear expectations for consumers, investors and the downstream gold supply chain as to what constitutes responsible gold mining.

In this webinar we will explore:
+ What role do upstream companies have in meeting the ESG aspirations of consumers?
+ What influence will the WGC have in shaping the future of gold traded in the institutional markets, particularly as they are increasingly shaped by ESG and climate change considerations?
+ How artisanal miners – an important but challenging part of the global value chain, unrepresented by any meaningful trade body – might be brought into scope.

  • Thematic Investing 4 Three approaches to fit thematic investments in a portfolio Recorded: May 20 2021 32 mins
    Pierre Debru, Director, Research, WisdomTree
Whether thematic investments are used tactically or strategically, investors’ portfolio allocation needs to be able to accommodate for them efficiently. However, thematic investments do not fit naturally in pre-existing processes and frameworks.

In this webinar, we propose three possible approaches to fit both tactical and strategic investments in investors’ portfolios. We will also look at how such allocations can improve the overall risk-return profile of such portfolios.
    • The Core Satellite Approach,
    • The Global Equity Approach,
    • The Long-Term Approach.

    Pierre Debru, Director, Research, WisdomTree
Fund selection in thematic investment is key because of the vast difference between funds in the same investment theme, whilst being challenging because of the absence of benchmarks, peer groups, and track records. In this webinar, we look to mitigate this issue by proposing that investors focus on strategy construction and their own beliefs about a given theme.

Our goal is to provide clear steps for understanding which strategy might best represent an investor’s conviction in a theme and its underlying story. To do so, we present a holistic framework for selecting thematic funds based on these five building blocks.
    1. Clarity of Theme,
    2. Expertise,
    3. Purity of exposure,
    4. Differentiation,
    5. Portfolio Construction.

Thematic investments provide an innovative investment approach, breaking from traditional silos like countries, sectors, factors, or regions. However, it is challenging to keep track of the ever-increasing number of investment solutions in the space when there is no recognised nomenclature.

To help fill that gap, in this webinar, we will introduce the WisdomTree Thematic Classification that splits the universe into 35 investment themes across four main clusters:
    • Social & Demographic Shifts,
    • Technological Shifts,
    • Geopolitical Shifts and
    • Environmental Pressures.

Thematic investments promise to harness long-term growth by turning structural, world-changing shifts into compelling investment opportunities. • Commodities Series Pt iv: Commodities, environment & the green energy transition Recorded: Mar 16 2021 32 mins
    Mobeen Tahir, Research, WisdomTree
Investors are becoming increasingly cognizant of the positive impact their decisions can make on the environment. As a green energy transition accelerates, the commodities consumed in the future will be different to those consumed today. Investors have an opportunity to try and get ahead of this structural shift and position themselves with the commodities expected to benefit. Greater consideration for the environment may also mean that the pace at which raw materials can be extracted (mined or drilled for example) will be slower than what we have seen in the past. Supply constraints may offer further price support to certain commodities.
In part iv of this webinar series we will shed light on the following:
•The frontiers where the green energy transition might be accelerating
•Where supply risks are most prevalent
•How investors can participate in the theme through commodities.

After a challenging start to 2020, the commodities complex recovered well in the second half of the year and is entering 2021 with a lot of positive momentum. Across this series we take a look at the key themes that we believe are likely to drive the commodities markets in 2021.
•A cyclical economic recovery – how will the manufacturing rebound impact commodities?
•Structural recovery - will infrastructure investment add a further tailwind to commodities?
•A focus on the environment – is the green energy transition accelerating?
•La Niña – how can nature disrupt the agriculture complex?

    Other webinars in this series:
+ Part i: The impending reflation and portfolio readiness
+ Part ii: A red sky at night, a commodity trader’s delight?
+ Part iii: Mind the (infrastructure) gap
  • WisdomTree US Market Update Webinar with Jane Street Recorded: Mar 11 2021 52 mins
Kevin Flanagan, Head of Fixed Income Strategy, WisdomTree | Emanuele Mastroddi, Institutional Sales & Trading, Jane Street
With the Democrat Party now in charge of the three branches of government in the US, what does that mean for growth/inflation prospects, U.S. interest rates and budget deficits?

The Federal Reserve’s (Fed) new average inflation targeting policy approach should keep short-term rates anchored towards zero, but as we’ve seen thus far in 2021, the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield can still move higher. Should U.S. Dollar based investors be considering rate-hedged strategies for their bond portfolios?

Join this exclusive webinar where Kevin Flanagan, Head of Fixed Income Strategy, WisdomTree will be joined by Emanuele Mastroddi, Institutional Sales & Trading, Jane Street who will discuss recent trends in US fixed income. The webinar will conclude with a live Q&A session.

    Highlights include:
+ Where is U.S. economic growth headed in 2021?
+ The ‘Reflation Trade’ makes a comeback
    + Do budget deficits matter?
+ Can the UST 10-year yield retrace all of 2020 decline?
+ Treasury Floating Rate Note (FRN) strategies vs. Treasury Inflation Protected Securities (TIPS)
+ The current backdrop in the US bond market
+ The continued adoption of fixed income exchange-traded funds (ETFs)
+ Floating rate securities in a rising rate environment

  • Commodities Series Part iii: Mind the (infrastructure) gap Recorded: Mar 2 2021 33 mins
    Nitesh Shah, Director, Research, WisdomTree
The World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council (GFC) on Infrastructure claimed the world is facing a US$15trillion infrastructure gap by 2040. Efforts to bridge infrastructure gaps in the past decade have been thwarted by a lack of policy inertia, policy paralysis and more urgent crises to deal with (COVID-19 comes to mind). But in 2021, are the stars aligned for a renewed effort?
•A Democratic sweep in the US unblocking potential roadblocks
•China employing its traditional form of stimulus
•Brexit negotiations no longer taking as much political bandwidth as in the recent past
•A global ‘green’ recovery being highly sought after

We believe an infrastructure-led structural recovery will support commodities for longer than the normal business cycle recovery. In part iii of this webinar series we will explore the drivers and likelihood of an increase in infrastructure spend boom as well as which commodities we favour if it were to happen.

After a challenging start to 2020, the commodities complex recovered well in the second half of the year and is entering 2021 with a lot of positive momentum. Across this series we take a look at the key themes that we believe are likely to drive the commodities markets in 2021.

  • EU bonds: A rising new player in European bond markets? Recorded: Feb 24 2021 58 mins
Lidia Treiber, Director, Research, WisdomTree | Philip Brown, Managing Director of Banking, Capital Markets & Advisory, Citi
The health pandemic has led to an unprecedented amount of fiscal stimulus and this time around the European Union has started to sell enormous levels of European Union bonds. It is a step in the right direction towards a more unified Europe in times of crisis. Investors can consider this as a way to construct more balanced portfolios, using European Union bonds that benefit from AAA credit ratings that are not linked to one European country. This is reminiscent of US Treasuries which are not linked to one state but provide funding for the US economy.

In this webinar, Lidia Treiber, Director of Research at WisdomTree will be joined by Philip Brown, Managing Director of Banking, Capital Markets & Advisory at Citi, where they will aim to demystify European Union bonds and shed light on this evolving asset class, which is set to become the second largest AAA rated issuer in Europe. Together, they will provide:
+ Insight into a new major fixed income player that emerges amid the crisis
+ Views on why European Union bonds matter to Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) investors
+ Citi dealer insights into the demand for newly issued EU bonds

This will be followed by a Q&A session where Lidia and Philip will be joined by Melvyn Merran, Head of Fixed Income Beta Trading, EMEA at Citi.
  • Commodities Series Part ii: A red sky at night, a commodity trader’s delight? Recorded: Feb 16 2021 30 mins
    Nitesh Shah, Director, Research, WisdomTree
The world is not short of weather-related proverbs. Whether they have a scientific basis or not is less well understood. But meteorologists agree we are currently in a ‘La Niña’ weather pattern – where a fall in ocean temperatures in east-central equatorial Pacific tends to drive fluctuations in global atmospheric temperatures. Agricultural commodity prices are highly influenced by weather. Unfortunately, weather is one of the hardest things to predict. But sometimes persistent weather patterns like the La Niña emerge. They offer us an opportunity to say which way crop yields are biased and which way prices are likely to head.
In part ii of this webinar series we will look at:
•What is the La Niña phenomenon and how consistent has it been in the past?
•Which agricultural commodities are likely to benefit?
•What other commodities are like to be impacted?

After a challenging start to 2020, the commodities complex recovered well in the second half of the year and is entering 2021 with a lot of positive momentum. Across this series we take a look at the key themes that we believe are likely to drive the commodities markets in 2021.

•What could be the drivers of an uptick in inflation this year?
•What strategies can investors employ to potentially hedge against inflation?

  • Part iv. The metals that stand to win the vehicle energy transition Recorded: Nov 25 2020 30 mins
    Mobeen Tahir, Research, WisdomTree
An economic recovery and rising inflation bodes well for industrial commodities but the metals with the greatest potential could depend on how ‘green’ the recovery is.

Electric vehicles need various metals, but not necessarily the same ones as internal combustion engine cars. Platinum and palladium are not needed in pure battery cars but nickel, cobalt and graphite for example are needed for battery cars (and less so in pure ICE cars). However both types of vehicles require copper and silver but in different proportions. In part iv of this series of 30 minute webinars, we will take a closer look at the use of different metals in the drive for green vehicles.

Across this series we will also consider the key forces fuelling industrial metals right now, which are:
+ Investors are seeking inflation hedges as prospects for prices are rising
+ Industrial demand is rising across US, Europe, and China as they recover from the deep COVID-19 recession
+ Fiscal and monetary stimulus are likely to see a rise in commodity-intensive infrastructure spending
+ In Europe a ‘green recovery’ is sought as the European Commission remains committed to its climate goals

    Other webinars in this series:
+ Part i: A greener world for precious metals - Spotlight on Palladium & Platinum
+ Part ii: A standout winner as vehicles de-carbonise - Spotlight on Nickel
+ Part iii: The demand for increasing robustness of grid infrastructure - Spotlight on Copper

  • Part iii. Demand for robustness of grid infrastructure - Spotlight on Copper Recorded: Nov 4 2020 30 mins
    Mobeen Tahir, Research, WisdomTree
An economic recovery and rising inflation bodes well for industrial commodities. Winners and losers could depend on how ‘green’ the recovery is.

In part iii of this series of 30 minute webinars, we asses the demand trends in copper, as copper wiring is essential for modern grid infrastructure. Cities across the world upgrade their grid infrastructure to accommodate electric vehicles demand for copper is set to expand. A further catalyst from expanded fiscal stimulus (invariably infrastructure-led) is likely to drive copper demand higher.

Across this series we will also consider the key forces fuelling industrial metals right now, which are:
+ Investors are seeking inflation hedges as prospects for prices are rising
+ Industrial demand is rising across US, Europe, and China as they recover from the deep COVID-19 recession
