John McConnell studied clinical microbiology and parasitology at the University of East London, before spending 6 years researching septic-shock-related topics at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital, London (now part of Imperial College London). He joined The Lancet in 1990 as a peer-review editor before becoming the first Web Editor in 1996. In 2001, John was the founding editor of The Lancet Infectious Diseases. He has appeared as an expert commentator on BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky News, Al Jazeera, CNBC, CNN, and CCTV America. In the past year, The Lancet Infectious Diseases has published some of the most impactful research on COVID-19.

COVID-19 Vaccines: An Update on Research & Global Availability

Research assessment should not be centered solely on bibliometrics such as publication and citation metrics but should encompass other measures that address the broad range of assessment-related questions. These cover research inputs, outputs and outcomes, such as funding, collaboration, usage, commercialization and the adoption of innovation. As more diverse data sources and metrics are used, a richer and more informative picture of research emerges.

The International Center for the Study of Research (ICSR) was established by Elsevier in 2019 with a mission to further the study of research and thus to contribute to the evidence base supporting the practice of research strategy, evaluation and policy. In 2020, ICSR and Elsevier signed the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) and endorsed the Leiden Manifesto for Research Metrics, two internationally-recognized statements of best practice in responsible research assessment.

In this Library Connect webinar, Christopher Belter will discuss what responsible research assessment might look like in practice for a large biomedical funding agency. ICSR staff members Andrew Plume and Holly Falk-Krzesinski will then discuss the recommendations of both DORA and the Leiden Manifesto and their implications for Elsevier as well as for librarians and their users.

Dr. Bonnie Ky is the Founders Associate Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology and tenured physician-scientist at the University of Pennsylvania and serves as the Director for the Penn Center for Quantitative Echocardiography and is the founding Director of the Penn Cardio-Oncology Translational Center of Excellence. She leads a highly active NIH-funded translational research program in cardio-oncology and is the PI of multiple investigator-initiated cohort studies and clinical trials focused on the study of the cardiotoxic effects of doxorubicin, trastuzumab, sunitinib, and radiation therapy in breast, renal cell, and lung cancers, and lymphoma patients.

Best Practices in Submitting Research for Highly Selective Journals

Cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, and an increasing threat in low-income and middle-income countries. In 2013 and 2015, The Lancet Oncology published two Commissions that highlighted the cancer landscape in Latin America and how it differed from more developed countries. The reports showed that funding for health care was just a small percentage of national gross domestic product and the percentage of health-care funds diverted to cancer care was even lower. Funding, insurance coverage, numbers of doctors, health-care workers, resources, and equipment were inequitably distributed between and within Latin American countries. The Commissions emphasised the need for structural reforms in health-care systems, the need for dedicated cancer control programmes for disenfranchised populations, the importance of expanding coverage of cancer registries and cancer plans, and the effect of implementing policies to improve primary cancer prevention. In this webinar, renowned experts from Brazil, Argentina, and Spain, revisit cancer control in Latin America via a more contemporaneous lens, with a focus on the challenges surrounding academic research funding, clinical trial recruitment, big data, and wider access to the latest diagnostic technologies.

Emerging technologies and clinical research in Latin America

Cancer kills more than 100,000 children each year, and yet 80% of pediatric cancers are curable with currently available interventions. Notably, the majority of these deaths occur in low‐income and middle-income countries. Yet no reliable data are available in low-income and middle-income countries on the burden of childhood cancer; on the cost of effective interventions; on current health coverage levels; or on the cost, feasibility, or health and economic benefits of scaling-up effective coverage.

In March, 2020, The Lancet Oncology published a Commission on Sustainable care for children with cancer, which provided a new analysis of the global childhood cancer burden and developed an economic investment case and evidence-based medical framework for implementing, integrating, and scaling up care pathways for childhood cancer.

About Dr. Alex Adjei:
Alex A. Adjei is a Professor of Oncology and Professor of Pharmacology in the Mayo College of Medicine. He is also a consultant in Medical Oncology at Mayo Clinic. Dr. Adjei is Director of the Early Cancer Therapeutics Program across all three Mayo Clinic sites, and leader of the Lung Cancer Program across all 3 Mayo Clinic sites. He is the Principal Investigator of the Mayo Phase I and Phase II NCI grants. Dr Adjei has served on a number of National Cancer Institute (US) Committees. He is currently co-chair of the Thoracic Malignancies Steering Committee. Dr Adjei is a past member of the IASLC Board of Directors.  He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Thoracic Oncology and the inaugural Editor-in-Chief of JTO Clinical and Research Reports. Dr. Adjei’s research is focused on experimental therapeutics and clinical drug development. He received the first ASCO Drug Development Research Professorship 2012-2017, in recognition of his mentorship and his work in cancer drug development. He has authored 280 publications dealing primarily with preclinical pharmacology and phase I trials as well as novel therapeutics/phase II trials of lung cancer.

Open science tools for discovering, promoting and sharing research

Pursuing a career as a physician-scientist can be daunting, especially as the success rates for securing research grants has declined from 33% to 19%, while the number of grant applications has increased by 72%. However, the pathway can provide personal and professional fulfillment and dynamism, if the individual is equipped with a roadmap for success. Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, MACC, editor in chief of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), and Harlan M. Krumholz, MD, SM, FACC, director of the Yale Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation at Yale School of Medicine, will discuss how to maintain a successful physician-scientist career at three stages: early career, mid-career and senior. They will include tips for grant receipts, the importance of the mentee/mentorship relationship, and the need for creativity in grant submissions. In addition, viewers will have the opportunity to ask these thought leaders questions and pointers.
