Frontline Perspectives: Credit Rating Actions on Italian Banks

In Q3 2025, total Credit Estimate (CE) volumes increased compared with volumes in Q1, Q2, and the same period last year, in line with the historical trend of rising activity in the second half of the year. This quarter, we assigned a total of 397 CEs, which include new CEs, refreshed CEs, and amendments, as well as a small portion of internal assessments. Currently, there are about 1,534 active/outstanding CEs across 1,224 leveraged corporate borrowers and more than 40 managers, including managers of collateralized loan obligations and private credit funds.

Middle market borrowers are under increasing financial pressure, with nearly 10% now operating under covenant relief and another 18% at risk of compliance trouble in 2026. No borrowers from last year’s covenant relief group have shown real financial improvement, and most are now relying heavily on external capital support—such as equity injections, junior debt, and PIK interest—to offset ongoing cash flow weakness.

U.S. Consumer ABS Update

New issue and refreshed Credit Estimates (CEs) volume in Q2 2025 remains consistent from the previous quarter and maintains pace with 2024. This quarter, Morningstar DBRS assigned a total of 306 CEs to new borrowers and existing CEs refreshed for periodic review and amendments, as well as a small portion of internal assessments. Excluding internal assessments, Morningstar DBRS reviewed 296 unique borrowers' last 12-month and audited financial data. Currently, there are about 1,522 active or outstanding CEs across 1,213 leveraged corporate borrowers and 46 collateral managers, including managers of collateralized loan obligations (CLOs) and private credit funds.

Morningstar DBRS expects the private credit market has plenty of room for further growth for a variety of reasons, including that assets under managements (AUM) in private credit remain multiples lower compared with those in private equity. Frontline Perspectives: Insurance-Related ABS

Heading into the second half of 2025, the trade war and tariff uncertainty continues to pose a challenging environment for the large Canadian banks. The Big Six's Q2 2025 adjusted earnings decreased 7.8% sequentially, driven by notably higher PCL on performing loans and lower noninterest revenue. Aggregate total PCL increased QOQ along with aggregate total PCL as a percentage of average net loans and acceptances. Moreover, aggregate PCL on performing loans more than tripled QOQ to $1.8 billion for the Big Six Canadian banks as global trade and tariff policy uncertainty remains elevated, weakening the outlook in North America. Aggregate loan growth stalled and was relatively flat QOQ. Although the operating and macroeconomic environment has become more challenging with weakening consumer spending and business investment, the Big Six remain well positioned with ample liquidity, stable funding, and solid capital levels.

Frontline Perspectives: European Banking Update: Q1 Highlights and Outlook amid Global Trade Tensions

The U.S. and Canadian economies held up reasonably well during the first quarter of 2025 amid rising trade tensions. Growth concerns took a turn for the worse in early April with the announcement of Liberation Day tariffs and trade tensions intensifying between the U.S. and China. Subsequent de-escalatory measures have, at least temporarily, diminished the severity of the tariffs' initial shock. However, we expect U.S. policy uncertainty to remain elevated going forward and act as a drag on growth in the second half of 2025.

Frontline Perspectives: North America Macroeconomic Update

Across commercial ABS, we have negative collateral performance outlooks on the equipment lease (primarily small ticket and transportation-backed transactions) and small business loan sectors, as we expect higher delinquencies and defaults coincided with lower recovery rates in 2024. However, we have stable credit rating outlooks on both sectors because of the relatively short term of collateral assets and generally deleveraging transaction structures. Meanwhile, we have stable outlooks on both aviation and 
 C-PACE ABS.
