The business case for investment in renewables appears to be clear. UNEP annual report assessed that renewable energy investment for 2010-2019 reached USD 2.5trillion. This, however, will not be enough to meet Climate and Sustainable Development Goals. The momentum in especially solar and wind power, as well as battery investment has been surging, but many reports (including UNEP’s) call for further acceleration in the global switch to renewables. The returns, especially in the battery investment have been good even during the Covid-19 period. But is the light for the investment in renewables indeed ‘green’ ?
-What challenges still remain to reach the scale required?
-Do we have enough space for new installations?
-Is a ‘solar roof’ over German motorways a solution?
-What are the recent developments in increasing sustainability of the materials used for renewables?
-Does it include critical materials?
-What are the approaches for the end of life issues?
-What is the impact of already legally binding Clean Energy Package (CEP)?
-How does battery investment economics look?
