2020 has challenged the security community unlike any other year. There were 3,932 publicly reported breaches, compromising over 37 billion records, by far the most records exposed in a single year since 2005. Compared to 2019, the total number of records compromised increased by 141%.

Disruptions at certain governmental sources, delayed reporting, and declining news coverage have all contributed to fewer breaches coming to light in 2020, but that is only part of the story.

The number of records exposed in 2020 increased to a staggering 36 billion by the end of Q3. There were 2,935 publicly reported breaches in the first three quarters of 2020, with the three months of Q3 adding an additional 8.3 billion records to what was already the “worst year on record.”
