Vulnerability Management In the Time of a Pandemic
We scheduled this discussion to talk about the trends we’re seeing in the vulnerability data from 2019, but guess what; that seems like a lifetime ago now. So we’ve shifted focus. Instead, we want to use this time to try to do something more valuable for our community. We want to rise to this moment and confront these new challenges we’re all facing head on. No nonsense, this isn’t a product demo, just a focused look at the state of vulnerability intelligence and how it applies in this new, changing time. Here’s what we’ve got:
The Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic continues to change our way of life, while threatening the global economy, but the work of risk management professionals is more important, and threatened, than ever. Over 22,000 vulnerabilities were aggregated by our VulnDB team during 2019. Brian Martin breaks down what we’ve learned, and how we apply that knowledge to a mid-pandemic world, where cyber criminals exploit the panic, hospitals are hit by ransomware, supply chains are disrupted, and key regulations are temporarily weakened.

2020 has challenged the security community unlike any other year. There were 3,932 publicly reported breaches, compromising over 37 billion records, by far the most records exposed in a single year since 2005. Compared to 2019, the total number of records compromised increased by 141%.
Disruptions at certain governmental sources, delayed reporting, and declining news coverage have all contributed to fewer breaches coming to light in 2020, but that is only part of the story.
Join us as we present findings from our Year End Data Breach QuickView Report and explore these and more striking trends involving breaches, COVID, and ransomware.
Inga Goddijn, Executive Vice President, Risk Based Security
The number of records exposed in 2020 increased to a staggering 36 billion by the end of Q3. There were 2,935 publicly reported breaches in the first three quarters of 2020, with the three months of Q3 adding an additional 8.3 billion records to what was already the “worst year on record.”
Breach disclosures continue to be well below the high water mark established just last year despite other research indicating that the number of attacks are on the rise. How do we square these two competing views into the digital threat landscape? In this webinar we present findings from our latest Data Breach QuickView Report and explore factors that may be contributing to the decline in publicly reported breaches, including the impact of COVID on media coverage, and the latest ransomware trends.
Attempts to influence elections are nothing new, but modern digital platforms open the door for meddling to be carried-out in real-time and at a much greater scale. IT Security Teams and Vulnerability Managers can’t seem to catch a break. While COVID-19 has severely impacted IT staffing and budgets, the vulnerability disclosure landscape has continued to keep us on our toes. Brian Martin looks into the latest vulnerability trends from mid year 2020, and how IT professionals can effectively respond to maintain the security of their businesses.
Inga Goddijn, Executive Vice President, Risk Based Security
Data breach reports are down 52% in the first half of 2020, yet the number of records exposed crossed an alarming 27 billion. Something doesn't add up. Inga Goddijn investigates the discrepancy, explores what the data is telling us about the impact of COVID on reporting, and reveals what it means for protecting your business.

Reported breaches in Q1 2020 decreased by 58% compared to Q1 2019, reflecting disruption from COVID-19, yet records exposed skyrocketed to 8.4 billion - a 273% increase.
In this webinar, Inga Goddijn looks into these and more findings from the Q1 2020 Data Breach QuickView report, breaking down what we've learned, how Coronavirus has impacted the landscape so far, and what it means for the rest of 2020.

Over 600 data breaches were disclosed in the first three months of 2018. While headlines can make for some interesting reading, what can we learn from these incidents to help improve security practices and lower the risk of breach event? Join Risk Based Security for a fun and informative look at the breaches and trends shaping the data loss landscape during the first quarter of 2018. We'll be covering our research and reviewing our findings from the Q1 Data Breach QuickView Report, including a closer look at the Facebook / Cambridge Analytica event and whether it should be characterized as a "breach".
From the latest blockbuster vulnerabilities to headline grabbing data breaches, Risk Based Security collects and aggregates threat intelligence so that you don't have to. We focus on vendor and product security, providing deep insight into third party risk through vulnerability analysis, breach research and vendor security scoring. Our channel includes quarterly reviews of our research reports and the occasional discussion of data breaches and vulnerabilities making news.
