About this talk

In military operations, having all the data in the world doesn’t matter if you can’t use it to maximize use of your resources and firepower where and when they’re most needed. There is no shortage of technology in the Department of Defense (DoD). However, there is a major gap when it comes to the tools that support data-driven decisions for the military teams in the field. Taking action on data collected in edge environments—far from core datacenters—requires sending raw data collected in the field back to command and then waiting for a decision. The time required for data collection, transmission, processing, and decision-making gives peer adversaries a major advantage. Accelerating innovation across application and infrastructure development at the edge is critical to meet the speed of relevance. To achieve this, military IT operations need the ability to disrupt the present mode of moving data to centralized servers for processing and decision-making. Transforming data from the field into warfare dominance requires changing where and how data is processed. The tactical edge must become more than a site for data collection. Military teams need near real-time data insights—made possible with technologies like containers, Kubernetes, and artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML). And bringing data processing power to edge environments allows decision-making to be automated, allowing the military leaders to respond to new information faster. To support near real-time cyber awareness posture, your actionable intelligence needs to be generated as close to raw data sources as possible to permit operational velocity for your OODA (observe, orient, decide, and act) loop.
