    About Kalyanam Shivkumar, MD, PhD, FACC:
    Dr. Shivkumar is a physician scientist who serves as the director of the UCLA Cardiac Arrhythmia Center, as well as the university’s electrophysiology programs. He is a professor of medicine (cardiology), radiology and bioengineering at UCLA.

    A specialist in interventional cardiac electrophysiology, Dr. Shivkumar has developed several innovative techniques for the catheter ablation of cardiac arrhythmias and other cardiac interventions. His research work, both basic/translational and clinical, relates to mechanisms of cardiac arrhythmias in humans and the role of the autonomic nervous system in sudden cardiac death. Dr. Shivkumar has been elected as a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC) and to the membership of the American Society of Clinical Investigation.

    Bertrand is a distinguished professor and director of the UCSD/CNRS Joint Research Chemistry Laboratory at UC San Diego. His research focuses on taming reactive carbenes, nitrenes, and diradicals and transforming these compounds into synthetically useful tools. He is a member of the French Academy of Sciences and, among other awards, received the ACS award for Inorganic Chemistry and the Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson Award of the RSC.

    Chiu earned her PhD at Texas A&M University, then worked at University Würzburg as an Alexander von Humboldt postdoctoral fellow. In 2010 she joined National Taiwan University where she is currently an Associate Professor focusing on the synthesis and catalytic application of cationic group 13 and 14 compounds.

    Hevia is a professor in Inorganic Chemistry at University of Bern. Her research includes incorporating the cooperative effects of polar organometallic reagents for key organic transformations as well as developing s-block based metal catalysis. Her work has been recognized with several awards including the 2021 GDCh Arfvedson-Schlenk Prize for her contributions to organolithium chemistry.

    Radosevich earned his PhD from UC Berkeley and completed an NIH postdoctoral fellowship at MIT. He then joined faculty at Pennsylvania State University before returning to MIT as an associate professor. His research focuses on designing new chemical reactions at the interface of inorganic and organic chemistry.

    Materials science is collaborative, and often the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Organized by Matter, this “pieces” webinar is an inaugural attempt to host an online discussion focused on a single material platform with a selection of invited experts—six individuals to share “pieces” of the same subject: perovskites.

    In recent years, the research and development of perovskites in the materials space has been unprecedented. One of the most promising features of perovskites is their photoactivity. Applications have been proposed in the areas of LEDS, photocatalysis, and X-rays/scintillators. The most attention has been given to perovskites’ photovoltaic potential; i.e., solar cells. Perovskites found themselves at the right place at the right time—a highly flexible platform at the intersection of societal need (renewable energy) and emerging materials science (synthesis, characterization, and device engineering). This has led to an emerging and strong community of researchers with a common goal. We have invited six global leaders in the field to summarize one aspect of their perovskite research:

    The participants were selected for their expertise, as well as their participation in the perovskite symposia in recent conferences, in which Prof. Yuanyuan (Alvin) Zhou has been actively involved. He then worked as professor at Eindhoven University of Technology. He is currently the chair of Flow Chemistry and full professor at the University of Amsterdam. His research interests are flow chemistry, homogeneous catalysis, and organic synthesis.

    Paradisi received her MSc and PhD from the University of Bologna in synthetic organic chemistry and conducted postdoctoral studies in biocatalysis at University College Dublin. Following time at Enzolve Technologies and an academic position at University College Dublin, she moved to the University of Nottingham. In 2019, she became the chair of Sustainable Pharmaceutical Chemistry at University of Bern. Her work focuses on developing sustainable and efficient biotransformations for the synthesis of high-value chemicals.

    Slater received her PhD in supramolecular chemistry from University of Nottingham in 2011. Following two postdoctoral positions, she took up a Royal Society-EPSRC Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship in 2016 and a Royal Society University Research Fellowship in 2021. Exploiting flow processes for enhanced control of chemistry is a central theme of her work. Her research interests include molecular materials, enabling technology and organic synthesis and self-assembly.

    Tim Cernak is an Assistant Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where the Cernak Lab is exploring an interface of chemical synthesis and data science. Prior to the University of Michigan, Tim was a member of the Medicinal Chemistry team at Merck Sharp & Dohme.

    Dani Schultz is the Director of the Discovery Process Chemistry Group at Merck. During her time at Merck, she has been involved in the development of synthetic routes for drug candidates spanning HIV and oncology and has utilized HTE and photochemistry to address the synthetic challenges that occur during pharmaceutical development.

    Jacob Janey is the Senior Director of Scientific Computing at Vertex Pharmaceuticals. Prior to this, Jake worked at Merck and later led the Chemical Process Development Technology Group at Bristol-Meyers Squibb. His work has included developing manufacturing routes using robotics, machine learning, HTE, and catalysis as well as data stewardship.

    Matthew Gaunt is the Yusuf Hamied 1702 Chair of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on the development of new chemical reactivity enabled by catalysts, including metal-catalyzed C–H bond activation, photoredox catalysis, selective chemical modification of biomolecules, and high-throughput synthesis.

Khademhosseini is best known for developing hydrogels for tissue engineering and bioprinting.

    Dr. Natalie Artzi holds research appointments at Harvard Medical School, MIT, and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Dr. Artzi is the recipient of multiple grants and awards, including the One Brave Idea; Stepping Strong Innovator, and Breakthrough Awards; Controlled Release Society Young Investigator Award; Mid-Career Award from the Society for Biomaterials; and the Bright Futures Prize.

    Dr. Wei Tao is an assistant professor at the Harvard Medical School.     Cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, and an increasing threat in low-income and middle-income countries. In 2013 and 2015, The Lancet Oncology published two Commissions that highlighted the cancer landscape in Latin America and how it differed from more developed countries. The reports showed that funding for health care was just a small percentage of national gross domestic product and the percentage of health-care funds diverted to cancer care was even lower. Funding, insurance coverage, numbers of doctors, health-care workers, resources, and equipment were inequitably distributed between and within Latin American countries. The Commissions emphasised the need for structural reforms in health-care systems, the need for dedicated cancer control programmes for disenfranchised populations, the importance of expanding coverage of cancer registries and cancer plans, and the effect of implementing policies to improve primary cancer prevention. In this webinar, renowned experts from Brazil, Argentina, and Spain, revisit cancer control in Latin America via a more contemporaneous lens, with a focus on the challenges surrounding academic research funding, clinical trial recruitment, big data, and wider access to the latest diagnostic technologies.

    Cancer kills more than 100,000 children each year, and yet 80% of pediatric cancers are curable with currently available interventions. Notably, the majority of these deaths occur in low‐income and middle-income countries. Yet no reliable data are available in low-income and middle-income countries on the burden of childhood cancer; on the cost of effective interventions; on current health coverage levels; or on the cost, feasibility, or health and economic benefits of scaling-up effective coverage.

    In March, 2020, The Lancet Oncology published a Commission on Sustainable care for children with cancer, which provided a new analysis of the global childhood cancer burden and developed an economic investment case and evidence-based medical framework for implementing, integrating, and scaling up care pathways for childhood cancer.

    About Dr. Alex Adjei:
    Alex A. Adjei is a Professor of Oncology and Professor of Pharmacology in the Mayo College of Medicine. He is also a consultant in Medical Oncology at Mayo Clinic. Dr. Adjei is Director of the Early Cancer Therapeutics Program across all three Mayo Clinic sites, and leader of the Lung Cancer Program across all 3 Mayo Clinic sites. He is the Principal Investigator of the Mayo Phase I and Phase II NCI grants. Dr Adjei has served on a number of National Cancer Institute (US) Committees. He is currently co-chair of the Thoracic Malignancies Steering Committee. Dr Adjei is a past member of the IASLC Board of Directors. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Thoracic Oncology and the inaugural Editor-in-Chief of JTO Clinical and Research Reports. Dr. Adjei’s research is focused on experimental therapeutics and clinical drug development. He received the first ASCO Drug Development Research Professorship 2012-2017, in recognition of his mentorship and his work in cancer drug development. He has authored 280 publications dealing primarily with preclinical pharmacology and phase I trials as well as novel therapeutics/phase II trials of lung cancer.

Prior to her role as JACC: Case Reports editor-in-chief, Dr. Grapsa served as an editorial consultant for JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging. Dr. Grapsa’s areas of research include valvular heart disease and the study of right heart remodelling.

    Mary Norine Walsh, MD, MACC is the medical director of the Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation Programs at St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital; director of Nuclear Cardiology at The Care Group, a member of St. Vincent Medical Group; and clinical associate professor of Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Her areas of expertise include nuclear cardiology, congestive heart failure and cardiac transplantation with a special interest in women and heart disease.

    About Steve W. Cranford:
    A graduate from Memorial University (Canada), Stanford University (USA), and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), Dr. Cranford was faculty at Northeastern University’s College of Engineering prior to accepting a new role as editor-in-chief for Matter.
    He has over 50 publications in the field of materials science in a range of high-impact journals, including Nature and Advanced Materials, with expertise in the area of atomistic simulation, computational modeling, and nanomechanics, encompassing a variety of materials systems, from carbyne to copper to concrete.
    He would have preferred to have published in Matter, but it didn’t exist. He constantly played with LEGO blocks as a child, likely leading to his interest in material assembly and structure.
