In this Cell Press webinar, Shinichi Sunagawa (ETH Zurich), Christelle A. M. Robert (Universitat Bern), and Emily R. Burdfield-Steel (Universiteit van Amsterdam) will discuss chemical interactions between ocean and gastrointestinal microbes and their hosts, plants and soil invertebrates, and mating insects. A discussion will follow hosted by editors from Cell, iScience, Trends in Ecology and Evolution, and Cell Genomics specifically on the interdisciplinary crosstalk in this area.

Speakers:

Prof. Shinichi Sunagawa is in the Department of Biology at ETH Zürich where he has led the Sunagawa Lab of Microbiome Research since 2016. Prof. Sunagawa is interested in studying ecological and evolutionary factors that determine the structure, function and diversity of microbial communities, currently focusing on the ocean ecosystem and the gastrointestinal tract of animals and humans. 

Prof. Dr. Christelle A. M. Robert is Head of the Chemical Ecology Group in the Institute of Plant Sciences at University of Bern in Bern, Switzerland and she is a chemical ecologist working on plant-herbivore interactions below ground, their ecological relevance, and underlying mechanisms.

Dr Emily R. Burdfield-Steel is an Assistant Professor of Chemical Ecology in the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). Dr Burdfield-Steel's areas of study are the evolution of mating communication systems in response to reproductive interference and the role of chemical and visual signals in aposematic insect populations.

Understanding the chemical mediators of ecological interactions

International collaborations have long been an important element of genomic science. In recent years, however, a number of factors have driven remarkable growth in global collaboration: the growth of information technologies, an increased emphasis on large cohorts with diverse representation, and rare disease therapeutics advances, just to name a few. With this shifting scope, work to address ethical challenges created by international collaboration has become an increasingly important part of the genomic science landscape. Nowhere are these challenges more pressing than in the work of scientific journals. While regulators, funders, and individual institutions tend to focus on issues specific to their setting, scientific journals encounter these issues on a truly broad, comprehensive, and international scale, serving as the final common pathway for a remarkable array of scientific techniques and strategies, varieties of collaborations, and regulatory jurisdictions. Scientific journals thus serve as critical stakeholders in ensuring that ethical considerations have been addressed prior to dissemination. In this session, Dr. Kyle Brothers, chair of the Ethics Advisory Committee for Genetics in Medicine, will examine the ethical issues raised by international collaboration in genomic science, with a focus on helping journals adopt practices that ensure published science has been conducted in a manner that protects the rights and welfare of research participants.

Ethical Issues in the Dissemination of Genomic Science: Perspectives from GIM

Targeted agents, immune and cellular therapies and other novel agents have led to dramatic shifts in the treatment of many hematologic malignancies (HM).  These therapies bear toxicities that are unique, chronic or delayed relative to conventional chemotherapies. Many are administered for months to years, impacting treatment tolerability over time.  In this context, a global, multi-disciplinary Lancet Haematology Adverse Events (AE) Commission comprised of patient advocates, clinical investigators, regulators and other stakeholders was assembled to examine and propose solutions to modernize AE assessment.  In this webinar, Commission leads will update key priorities in improving AE evaluation with a focus on patients with HM not only living longer but living better.

Giovanni Traverso is an assistant professor in the department of mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and also a gastroenterologist with Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), Harvard Medical School. His current research program is focused on developing the next generation of drug delivery systems to enable safe and efficient delivery of therapeutics, working on a biomedical device to support new modes of drug administration, and sensing a broad array of physiologic and pathophysiologic signals. 

Laura Sepp-Lorenzino, PhD joined Intellia Therapeutics in 2019 as chief scientific officer and is responsible for research and early development. Intellia’s leading CRISPR platform supports a full-spectrum therapeutic strategy. Laura previously held leadership positions at Vertex, Alnylam, and Merck.

Dr. Ryan Flynn is an assistant professor at Boston Children’s Hospital in the Stem Cell Program and the department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology at Harvard University, where his lab is investigating the chemical nature and biological role of RNA glycosylation. Dr. Flynn has won multiple awards including the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, the Sontag Foundation, and the Rita Allen Foundation Scholars Award.

After obtaining his MD from UW, he completed a residency in pediatrics at The University of Cincinnati/Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Medical Center.  Dr. Steiner trained in medical genetics at The University of Washington/Seattle Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center. About Lewis Collins:
Inspired by David Attenborough documentaries as a child, Lewis has been amazed by the natural world from an early age. While undergraduate and master’s degrees in Earth science (Cardiff University), and Climate Change (University of East Anglia) nurtured this interest, it was doctoral (British Antarctic Survey) and post-doctoral (Université Pierre et Marie Curie) research on Antarctica that centered his focus on environmental change. Dr. Bonnie Ky is the Founders Associate Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology and tenured physician-scientist at the University of Pennsylvania and serves as the Director for the Penn Center for Quantitative Echocardiography and is the founding Director of the Penn Cardio-Oncology Translational Center of Excellence. Dr. Moliterno is the Editor-in-Chief of JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions. He is the Jack M. Gill Chair and Professor of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Kentucky. He is also a member of the interventional cardiology faculty at the Gill Heart and Vascular Institute in Lexington, Kentucky. He has been involved with numerous investigational studies in cardiovascular medicine over the last two decades, with his primary research interest being in acute coronary syndromes.
