International carbon markets are rapidly evolving in response to the challenges presented by climate change, with a significant increase in carbon market activity, reflecting the continued rapid expansion of private sector net zero commitments. Meanwhile, interest in nature-based solutions, such as sustainable forestry, has risen markedly within a constrained supply environment. But the criticism surrounding carbon market standards continues: Looking forward, high-quality, high-integrity practices that support real, additional, and permanent carbon sequestration will be key to strengthening confidence. Clearer and more transparent standards will help transform the effectiveness of carbon markets as a means for investors and companies to meet their climate goals.
In this session, Manulife Investment Management’s Eric Cooperström, managing director of impact investing and natural climate solutions, and Beatriz Zavariz, associate director of international carbon markets, will examine significant factors supporting the growth and integrity of global carbon markets, and provide an outlook for their future.
