COVID-19: Changing sentiment, attitudes and behaviours of the over 50s

It’s undeniable that this global pandemic has had a huge impact on our daily lives. You would need more than a crystal ball to foresee what the longer-term impact might be. However, we are already starting to see shifts in the over 50’s sentiment, attitudes and behaviours in response – from feelings of ageism to a greater concern about their family rather than themselves. What shifts are we seeing and what does this actually mean for financial advice?

Join Chris Knight, CEO of Legal & General Retail Retirement, as he talks to Millie Hyde-Smith, Head of PR & Thought Leadership LGRR, and Tony Mattson, Head of Strategy at Havas Media Group. We’ll be discussing the latest consumer insights from the UK’s over 50 population – how COVID-19 is changing their sentiment, attitudes and behaviours and what this might mean for your business and your clients.

  • Closing the gender gap: value of advice for fairer financial futures Recorded: Apr 29 2021 46 mins
Cecilia Furner, Strategic Partnerships Director for Legal & General Retirement Solutions and panel of experts
Half of the UK population are more likely to struggle financially in retirement. The research is clear that social inequalities weigh heavily upon the retirement savings of women. Despite progress, there’s still a £350bn advice opportunity to close the gender gap in savings and investments. In this episode of “In conversation with…” we discuss how advisers can play a critical role in finding financial fairness for women in later life.

Hosted by Cecilia Furner, Strategic Partnerships Director for Legal & General, we're welcoming an expert panel, including Jane Portas, Co-Founder Insuring Women’s Futures, author of the Risks in Life Report Series and creator of the ‘6 Moments That Matter’ in financial life for improving financial futures.

Jane will present insights on the Financial Life Journeys for couples in later life, highlighting considerations for financial advisers around the gender gaps that are relevant to advising women, men and couples divorcing in later life.

Hilary Woodward, Cardiff School of Law and Politics and CEO of the Pensions Advisory Group will discuss the obstacles facing women in divorce and explore ‘best practice’ in pension sharing and offsetting in divorce.

We will also be joined by Jane Hanlon, Mortgage Club Manager for Advise Wise to discuss the practical ways that financial advisers can help women and build client relationships that will last a lifetime.

It’s a critical time to be invested in the financial futures of women; 67% of all UK household consumption is controlled or influenced by women. By 2025, it’s estimated that women will hold 69% of all wealth in the UK.
  • Later life divorce and the impact on financial planning Recorded: Nov 18 2020 50 mins
Debora Price, University of Manchester, Amyr Rocha-Lima, Holland Hahn & Wills LLP and panellists from LGRR
The divorce rate in later life is on the rise, in contrast to the decline among younger age groups. One in four divorces occurs after the age of 50, and this can have a significant financial impact on retirement. Research suggests that this trend is set to continue, with COVID-19 lockdowns fuelling an increase in divorce enquiries in the UK.

Divorce presents huge emotional, legal and financial challenges for clients. Yet, new research from Legal & General Retail Retirement reveals that, when going through a divorce, people aged over 50 are more than four-times as likely to take advice from their friends as they are from a financial adviser. Just 3% seek financial advice at this critical time.

Join Cecilia Furner, Strategic Account Director for Legal & General Retail Retirement, as she talks to Debora Price, Professor of Social Gerontology, University of Manchester, a member of the Pension Advisory Group and one of the lead authors of the report ‘A Guide to the Treatment of Pensions on Divorce: the Report of the Pension Advisory Group’ (July 2019), and Amyr Rocha-Lima, Partner, Holland Hahn & Wills LLP, chairman-elect of the CISI Financial Planning Forum, and a certified & chartered financial planner who specialises in helping successful professionals reduce taxes, invest smarter and retire on their terms.

We will be joined by Rob Miles, Head of Adviser Sales, Legal & General Home Finance and Meg Dickens, Marketing Director, Legal & General Retail Retirement who will be sharing the latest consumer insights from our research on the trends, attitudes and behaviours of divorcing couples aged over 50 and what this might mean for your business and your clients. In addition, we will look at how financial advisers can build professional connections with solicitors to support clients during this critical time, as well as maintaining control of their client relationships.

Cecilia Furner - Strategic Account Director at Legal & General
This is not a consumer advertisement. It is intended for professional financial advisers and should not be relied upon by private customers or any other persons.

The world of retirement has radically changed – a carriage clock retirement no longer exists and a one product approach is no longer relevant. Retirement is far from the ‘colourless’ label that we appear to have given it.

As client expectations, aspirations and needs continually evolve, the retirement plans and solutions we build need to provide greater flexibility and security.

In this presentation Cecilia Furner, Strategic Account Director at Legal & General, will assess how retirement has changed, what this means for retirement planning and how a multitude of solutions can be layered together to help achieve your clients’ objectives.

By the end of the webinar:
    - You will have a greater understanding of how evolving macro and socio-economic factors are impacting and radically changing retirement norms
    - You will have a greater understanding of how these changes call for more tailored and flexible retirement plans
    - You will be able to better evidence how a range of solutions can be layered to provide clients with security, flexibility and control
    - You will be able to identify the changing role of advice in modern day retirement planning and the shifting focus towards ‘life planning’
