The energy revolution: Investment ideas for a lower carbon world

To cap pollution in Europe, the EU Commission forces industrial companies to obtain “permits to pollute”, called carbon allowances or EUAs.  Each EUA is a permit to pollute 1 tonne of carbon dioxide. Under EU law, each year the supply of carbon allowances shrinks, reducing the amount of pollution and aiding Europe’s transition to Net Zero. 

Since the supply of carbon allowances is diminishing, their scarcity value is increasing.  This creates potential for attractive returns among investors. 

Buying a physical allowance means investors prevent pollution in 3 ways. While investors hold physical allowances, polluters cannot use them. Under EU law, withholding an allowance triggers additional allowances being cancelled in the future, further reducing supply. As polluters and investors compete for a reduced supply of EUAs, prices rise until dirty fossil fuels are too expensive for industrial firms to continue using. This forces polluters to find cheaper, greener alternatives.

But how can investors gain access to the carbon market? 

We’ll be joined by Phil Beattie, Head of Strategic Partnerships at SparkChange, to discuss the history of the carbon market and the different ways EUAs prevent pollution.

Investing in the post-pandemic world: new and emerging themes

How worried should investors be about inflation and rising interest rates? What does a world of potentially higher inflation and interest rates mean for investors? The past decade was a world of low inflation, low interest rates and sluggish economic growth. The pandemic, and its after effects, has shaken this up. But one nasty side effect has been rising inflation. In the United States, United Kingdom and Europe, inflation has reached levels not seen in a generation. While it was initially hoped that this inflation would be temporary, support for such a view is fading. It is now increasingly feared that inflation is at risk of becoming entrenched – the Federal Reserve has stopped referring to inflation as “transitory.” Indeed, centrals banks have started to cautiously raise interest rates and scale back quantitative easing.

There was no shortage of surprises in 2021. While the year started off with strong optimism around vaccines and economies re-opening, it soon became apparent that new variants were emerging just as fast as vaccinations could be carried out. We also saw huge strains on supply chains and levels of inflation unseen in a generation. On top of all this, we saw a surge in energy prices towards the end of the year. Meanwhile, Chinese authorities launched a crackdown on technology firms, rattling markets.

Thematic ETFs: Outlook for 2022 and beyond

The sudden rise of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies has provoked conversations about the wide array of alternative asset classes and how institutional investors can gain access to them and use them to hedge against inflation. During the market uncertainty of the past 18 months, gold has managed to maintain it’s title of a ‘safe haven’, with Funds Europe reporting  “in many ways, the pandemic drove gold to new heights as it put the asset class front and centre of investors’ minds as they sought refuge from the financial fallout” [2]

Anthony Bamber, Head of Business Development at The Royal Mint. The Royal Mint is Britain’s oldest company with a history dating back to 886 AD. Andrew will provide a brief overview of the history of The Royal Mint and the current behaviours in the gold market.

Eric Strand, AuAg Funds. Eric is the founder of the AuAg Silver Bullet Fund and the recently-launched AuAg ESG Gold Miners ESG UCITS ETF. Eric will be providing a practitioner’s view of the gold market and what investors can expect at the end of 2021 and going into 2022.

The airline industry:
In the U.S., the pandemic meant commercial air travel demand hit a record low on April 13, 2020, with the number of passengers totaling 87,534, an incredible 96% decline from the same calendar day a year earlier. The impact to European network traffic was just as severe: In the week ended April 19, 2020, there were nearly 90% fewer flights than the same period in 2019, according to Eurocontrol. Global airline stocks tanked 20% in February 2020, a further 40% in March.
