Choosing when to retire is a complex decision at the best of times, however the recent cost of living crisis has made many who are thinking of retiring in the next couple years reassess their plans, especially as some may feel they cannot manage their pension contributions in the run up to their retirement.

Understanding your finances and how you can maximise your money through these turbulent times can help you maintain and build on your retirement plans and therefore give you confidence you will have the desired lifestyle you want in retirement. E.g. did you know that if you use your tumble dryer twice a day over the winter you could be paying £1.48 per day on this alone. By reducing the amount of electricity, you use, the extra savings could be used on other finances, such as your retirement.

With this in mind the PMI, supported by WEALTH at work, a leading financial wellbeing and retirement specialist, are running ‘Managing your finances as you approach retirement’ taster sessions which will show you ways to help your employees manage their money and still be able to save for a happy retirement. The Taster sessions which will last for 1 hour will be running on Thursday 16th March, Thursday 13th July & Thursday 12th October 2023 and are open to all PMI members as well as affiliated employees and pension scheme members.

The “Managing your finances as you approach retirement’ taster session will provide an improved understanding of how your employees manage their finances leading up to and into retirement, which in turn will enable them to make better retirement decisions.

Understanding Investment Only Platform Solutions

The Dormant Assets Scheme was first established in 2011 as a voluntary scheme for UK banks and building societies to use dormant assets to fund social and environmental initiatives across the UK, whilst protecting the reclaim rights of asset owners. Since then, over 40 banks and building societies have joined the Scheme, transferring nearly £900m distributed to good causes. Based on its success, and with the first new participant now live, the Scheme is now open to providers of pensions and insurance providers, with the first new pa. This headline from a survey of pension scheme managers highlights the need for pension managers to work additional hours to keep up.
And 61% say that they would need to seek external resource if the trustees or sponsoring employer wanted to carry out additional projects.
A concerning headline as trustees turn to their pension manager to establish and potentially lead the Risk Management Function (one of the three Key Functions TPR needs to include in the General Code). A significant project to be undertaking at an already pressurised time.
Importantly, pensions law states the Effective System of Governance (ESoG) needs to ensure the continuity and regularity in the performance of the scheme’s activities. This includes the development of contingency plans.
The headline would suggest that the first action for the Risk Management Function would be to consider the continuity plan for the key person risk of the struggling pensions manager. Particularly if the pensions manager is leading the Risk Management Function.

Gareth Craft and Jack Gillions from the Linklaters Pensions team will discuss some of the key legal hurdles Trustees need to overcome, viewed through the lens of the member’s perspective and experience, on transfers to a DC master trust and when entering the decumulation phase. They will look at some of the key practical and regulatory issues faced by Trustees when giving guidance to help members navigate the options during the decumulation phase, along with the potential legal risks of introducing decumulation options into a scheme at retirement.

The Pensions Regulator and the Financial Conduct Authority are close cousins. They are both regulators who deal with pensions but approach it from a different angle. Until recent years they have not been operating in the same territory but now the barrier between these territories is fading. How is this affecting providers, employers and pension scheme trustees right now? Will the new consumer duty mean that some mastertrusts find themselves being regulated by more than one regulator? What influence could this have on the development of the pensions industry in the future? 2022 was the year inflation returned with a vengeance. This new regime is not just about higher average inflation, but also higher inflation volatility. There was nowhere to hide as equities and bonds fell together making traditional diversifying techniques redundant - particularly painful later in the lifecycle. We will explore what this means for DC portfolios, taking tangible lessons from 2022.

Solving the Pre-Retirement Conundrum

This panel will discuss how DC schemes, both single employer and master trusts, can incorporate private markets investments into default portfolio allocations today. Conversation topics will include how to overcome challenges such as charge cap considerations, daily pricing, liquidity management and performance fees in a DC world. Lastly, this session will also address continued government encouragement by reducing barriers to access such private markets investments for DC investors.

Accessing private markets for defined contribution schemes

Threading the needle to provide options for DC investors is difficult – from meeting regulatory requirements, to solving for the operational constraints of DC platforms to fitting into master fund charge caps. An area where DC plans are under provided for in terms of options is real estate. It is the same across other private markets. Other institutional investors have a wide spectrum of real estate investment options in terms of geography (why limit yourself to the UK at only 5% of the universe), sector and risk return profile. Invesco has worked hard to address these challenges by providing investors with access to platform friendly offerings that meet the return, diversification, liquidity, and sustainability needs in a cost-effective manner.

In this session Simon Redman, Real Estate Managing Director and Mary Cahani, Director – UK institutional at Invesco will talk through the development of these real estate offerings and how they can help meet investor needs in the short and long run.
