KEYNOTE | Applied data science – how to compete in population health (AIS NY 18)

KEYNOTE | Effectively pairing artificial intelligence with human intelligence

In this live interview from the AI Summit New York 2018, Sylvain Filippi, managing director and CTO at Envision Virgin Racing, talks about the many ways AI and analytics are shrinking the R&D cycle for electric vehicles.

He shares some interesting background facts on Formula E, and the rationale behind its hour-long races - something that usually requires two cars per driver, changed midway through.

"What we are trying to do is to show to the world how quickly you are able to improve this technology," Filippi said. "Instead of people like me talking about for hours data and numbers, we were trying to think: what is the most visual way for people to understand how quickly we are improving this tech?

"The target that we set ourselves four years ago was to say, OK, we have three years of R&D, three years of iteration, to go from two cars per driver to one car per driver."

"To be honest, four years ago I had no idea if  we could do it or not, it was pretty challenging, but now I'm really happy to say that we've done it, and the car that you can see on the show floor is going to have its first race next week."

Boehringer Ingelheim is the world's largest private pharmaceutical company, with 146 affiliates and more than 50,000 employees including more than 8,000 in research and development.

According to Nandy, there are use cases for AI in due diligence, legal analytics, IP law, and even electronic billing; he focused on eDiscovery, with examples specific to the workings of a pharma company.

"It's about the end-users, how willing they are to adopt the tool," he said. "If the end-users are attorneys and paralegals, let's say, they are not that tech-savy. If we bring up terms like natural language processing, they don't feel comfortable. Rather, we should mention what's in it for them, how it's going to make their life easy. And if you focus on that, I think AI can be implemented pretty well not just in pharma, but in any industry."
